Seldom has black humour been done so well. On the surface, this film about the everyday lives of some unusually mundane characters, sounds extraordinarily boring. But it is instead a cutting comment on the absurdity and drudgery of everyday life. The characters try to break out or change their lives without success, and the results are bleak and hilarious. A hotel receptionist who dearly wants a child leaves herself messages, a life-insurance salesman is distracted by the noise of a couple having sex in the next room, and a wife dealing with the sudden disappearance of her husband receives a card from his employer. It’s a humane piece that creates a huge impact through a subtle touch.
