Half a year ago, I found myself involved as the director of photography in a short video production. The project was called Musa, directed by WCP collective, and the aim was to transpose feelings and emotions such as love and rage. This video is the story of a woman who interacts with, and expresses her feelings through, flesh and bread. Watch on in awe and surprise.

Sam Brooks is an artist and illustrator from England. His incredibly detailed pen work creates images that are richly detailed and visually striking. Taking influence from artists like Breugel and Bosch his images are populated with beautifully grotesque characters and explore themes of psychoanalysis and mentality. His surreal, nightmarish portraits are particularly intriguing.

My new EP, The Sudden Stop, was released worldwide on February 14. I use songs to tell myself things I need to hear. As a kind of therapy, I guess. I see two versions of myself with different characteristics. These two guys are at it most of the time, constantly arguing. I kind of write songs so I can hear the words come back to me like anybody else would.

With the increasing technology and many with a decent camera at the convenience of their mobiles, almost everyone can claim to be a ‘photographer’. It is in this digital world that Paulius Rudokas challenges this orthodox. At only 18 years old, he is unlike many of his age; prefering to use black and white film and develops and prints his photographs in his bedroom (he is not yet able to get a dark room). He believes that film forces the photographer to make every shot matter which is reflected in his prints; though not perfect, often filled with charming character.

Based out of Denver, Colorado, Nick Sparks is an editorial and art photographer. After picking up a film camera at age 20 and shooting landscapes on Kodak Tri-x film for a few years, Sparks decided to ditch film and start shooting editorial work using digital format. He composes vivid, emotionally charged portraits, drawing the viewer in with intense, sometimes dark imagery which produces an emotional connection between the viewer and his photographs.

During the turn of the 19th century, China was home to a lovely clash of East-meets-West culture. And lucky for us, Louis-Philippe Messelier, a French wool trader turned photojournalist, was there to capture the energy of the period in this series of black and white photos. Anything from unusual street performers, pristine countryside, film studios, and the images of the reigning aristocracy all of it finds its way into this portrait of a rapidly modernized China. It’s truly an elegant juxtaposition.

The Time That Remains is a double channel, black and white film from Australian-based sister duo, Soda Jerk. Forming part of their series, The Dark Matter Cycle, The Time That Remains explores the concept of hauntology and it’s related social theories. Joan Crawford and Bette Davis move in and out of dream states during the film – perpetually waking to find themselves being haunted by themselves at different age forms. How do they reclaim time? You’ll just have to watch to find out.

This “innovative” attempt at reducing fatigue on long flights was the future of flight back in 1949. The design was meant to help air force pilots withstand the stress of a strong gravitational pull which would minimize blackouts. The caption of the photograph reads: ‘United States Air Force pilots are finding it much safer and more comfortable to lie down while handling the controls of a plane’. Well, there you have it: the future of flight.

Ana De Orbegoso is fascinated with the concept of walls. We build walls to create separation, to give privacy, and to protect things. We build personal walls for the same reasons. We want to build barriers between ourselves and the rest of the world. These invisible walls hide our deepest fears and greatest aspirations. Ana De Orbegoso’s photography plays on this theme by capturing people of her hometown Lima, Peru creating invisible walls over their faces with ghostly hands.

When was the last time you sent a paper airplane love letter to a complete stranger? Well, maybe you should take a hint from Paperman and try it out. It seemed to work for him. Paperman is a short film that came about when director John Kahrs began to wonder if his interactions with strangers on a public train could ever amount to anything more. The short was executed using a gorgeous animation style that fuses hand-drawn illustration with top of-the-line computer animation.

Yuchen Chiu is one of my favorite New York City street photographers. She shoots most of her photos with black and white 135 film. Her photos are not only poetically beautiful but also carry the weight of history and fact and reflect the versatile facets of place, such as New York City, Havana, and Rome, where it reminds her of Taiwan, where she is originally from.

A dramatic love story has to be clever enough to still give you smiles. Tabu has it – photography like no other with a magnificent story that makes you want to walk along the river looking for crocodiles. This was a winner of the 2012 Berlin Film Festival: the FIPRESCI Jury Prize and Alfred Baeur Prize for Artistic Innovation.

This is the first clip from Madrid, the new project of Adriano Cintra of Fame and Marina Vello of Bonde de Role. I have been looking forward to it since one of their earlier collaborations on a cover version of Freak le Boom Boom by Gretchen kept ringing in my ears for a long time. The video was shot by Dacio Pinheiro in São Paulo last month and I like the dark atmosphere and aesthetics of classical black and white cinema.
