There is something strange and fantastical in Gary McCauley’s work. His pastels tell a story, or often several stories, with symbolic, and at times bizarre, imagery. His work reflects a child’s fascination with the world around him, filtered through the eyes and memories of an adult.

His recent work is a study of the pieces and parts that make up the whole: little strips and shreds from his own memories layered and placed together in a collage of shapes, color, and textures to create a new story with old characters.

There’s something wrong with this picture, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. Oh yes, there’s the word Kunst written on the building. Entitled House Attack, this artwork by Erwin Wurm features a cute little suburban cottage wedged on the rooftop of the MUMOK (the Museum of Modern Art or in German, Museum Moderner Kunst) in Vienna. The exhibition is now gone, but it does leave a lasting impression.
