That’s right, some wonderfully talented and imaginative people teamed up with school kids to make a twenty foot balloon Acrocanthosaurus for display at the Virginia Museum of Natural History. Using a real skeleton of the dinosaur as a guide, they tried to make it as realistic as possible. However, nobody really knows what their skin looked like, so for all we know, this dinosaur could have been tie-dye.

Steve Carr’s Screen Shots from his Mystical Realisms; Modest Gestures series provide thought-provoking visuals that play upon the painting process itself. Carr’s left hand holds a balloon filled with paint. His right hand then slowly-does-it inserts a needle into the balloon. The balloon bursts in slow motion to reveal the containing paint as it falls (Carr’s shirt remains meticulously white, you’ll be pleased to know) and a moving painting is born.

I like the work, but I think I’d prefer to see the balloons explode in huge paintball splatters of colourful goodness. But maybe that’s just me?

Mix two of our favourite things, balloons and light, and it’s hard not to have a winner. Designed by Kouichi Okamoto, the balloon lamp fuses a high-intensity LED light with a translucent white balloon to light up its surroundings with a diffused glow. It can run for over 100 hours with the included batteries. Hmm, wonder if people who fear balloons will ever be cured of their phobia with the help of this form of light therapy.
