No gimmicks, no explosions, no hundred-dollar haircuts. I first saw The Drones in a gritty Melbourne venue about six years ago and they played to only twenty people. They were amazing then and they play with the same intensity and vigor now. The best musicians play for themselves, not the audience and that’s exactly how The Drones do it. Their music is so full of emotion that it can be intimidating.

Australian rock band, Fiasco Burning, play melodic, soulful music infused with off beat lyrical hooks and bursting with singalong choruses. Their debut album, Place, is a feisty, summery sound, described by their engineer as ‘chocolate rock’. We checked in with drummer Anthony Brookman and asked him what the hell that refers to: ‘It’s flavoursome, smooth, fruity, occasionally funky and occasionally sexy. At the end of the day, it rocks, but its not one-dimensional; it has colour and groove. The term evolved from a moment we were all listening to a particular take of a song, and Russ, the engineer, said, “Aah, there it is, there’s the sexual chocolate”. We all cracked up. It kinda went from there’.

A couple of week back we invited Aussie rockers, The Basics, to write a diary for us as they toured the deepest reaches of the vast Australian continent. This is the second half of their installments: ‘Tuesday, November 18: ‘We have an interview with the Longreach Leader newspaper today, before playing Longreach State School. It’s been a little hard to get press for this part of our tour, and understandably- no-one from the public can come to the school gigs we’re doing, and we’re not in any one town long enough to do a face to face interview that can actually go to print before we’ve moved on somewhere else. But the Longreach Leader has generously offered to do a short piece on our travels and about the Lifeline charity we’re supporting with our gigs out here. The editor of the paper is an older woman, maybe 50, with grey hair and a firm handshake. She’s straight-to-the-point. No wasting time here. What are our names? Where have we travelled? What’s the charity name? Okay, that sounds like enough. Thanks very much for your time gentlemen, and we’re out the door. It has to be the quickest interview we’ve ever done. Which is kinda nice.It means we can go to the bakery for lunch before the show today’. Read more

An anonymous public school teacher known as Mrs. Q, following Morgan Spurlock’s lead, decided to eat every school lunch served to her for the duration of 2010. At the risk of her job, she documents her experience on her blog, which features photographs of the atrocious, shrink-wrapped, processed poison that she and her students are forced to choke down every school day.
It goes without saying that Hip Hop has taken a few very low hits in the past decade. Thanks to the likes of 50 Cent and company, it accounts for around 40% of all music sold in America. It’s a huge industry. So where does that leave Hip Hop artists doing something a bit different? Lord T and Eloise wear wacky outfits, make crazy music and bring a whole lot of fun back into Hip Hop. What’s more, they’ve started a new genre called ‘Aristocrunk’. Watch out!
Swedish designer Paula Hagerskans has a cool masculine-edge to her female fashion lines. But it’s her attention to detail that really blows my mind. Her perfectly tailored jackets, along with her flat dress shoes, make dressing up fun, comfortable and classy. When asked what she keeps in mind while designing, Hagerskans responds, ‘Bohemic music lovers, humor, graphic design and the female body’.
