Well, because he’s just one of those everyday music and video geniuses, that’s all. Have a look at his Vimeo and you will see what I’m on about.

I am a huge fan of film clips like this, design in general, actually: simple and really effective. This video was directed by Thomas Thoms. The Go Roll Your Bones have an EP out which was mixed by Mikey Young from the Eddie Current Supression Ring. It’s music to put on loud with some headphones and get some work done.

This intriguing duo showed up on my doorstep in Sydney a few years ago wanting some help with their first album cover after a call from their record company. We polished off the design together, and I was inspired after meeting David and Eden, or Lovers Electric as they’re known in Australia, UK and Germany. They’ve just released their second LP and this first single, Beating Like A Drum, is beautifully shot, directed and performed. What is it about duos that are romantically linked?

Dreamboat is from Victoria. I found out about him through my brother, who saw him playing in a park in Toronto. Once I looked him up, I was amazed by his song called Molly Ringwald [listen below]. He has awesome danceable qualities that are paired with vocals tested by all the complexities of being culturally aware, but living a small suburban town.

Will Ever Pray is the debut album by Doomed Bird Of Providence, which is the project of Australian musician Mark Kluzek, telling tales of sea faring, stories of mutiny, and horrific piracy in Australian waters back in colonial times. Dark, nautical tales, the furthest away from sea shanties you could ever hope to get. Brutally magnificent.

Grün is an Australian band blending elements of post-rock, electronica, alternative and prog-rock. Inspired by diverse artists like Dead Can Dance, Four Tet, Phillip Glass, Tool and Sigur Ros, Grün’s obsession with film and soundtrack clarifies their sound — it’s visual without the visuals, the score to a film that doesn’t exist.

This kaleidoscope music video by Australian band Teeth & Tongue is just what I need to help me get through another busy work week. So while I may be stuck inside editing papers, at least I’ll have this hypnotic video to help me pretend that I’m out dancing in the snow.

Australian band Van She had a cultish hit single a little while back with their synth-pop track Kelly. The voyeuristic film clip was simple enough — girls called Kelly kissing boys — but it was strangely beguiling. We asked the guys where the creative inspiration for the clip came from: ‘We worked on that video with a friend of ours who has a really strong style in terms of Grading and set plotting and location spotting, a style which was perfect for the song Kelly. At the time we were, and still are, really in to movies like the Breakfast Club, Virgin Suicides, and anything that has that lost sense of nostalgia’. ‘I think Kelly is such a poppy song and is really optimistic, so we thought Nicholas Randall would be perfect for that sense of confused, elated and warm nostalgia. And, yes, we auditioned about 200 girls called Kelly and found the cutest, most normal yet quirky bunch for the video and asked them to bring someone they want to kiss in the video. Mikey and I were at a club once after we shot it and this guy came running up to us and with a huge smile on his face and hugged us both and said, “Thank you so much! You don’t understand. I have wanted to kiss my friend all of my life and finally got to because of your video”. That for me was the best reaction to the song Kelly we could have ever hoped for’.
