Regan Tamanui, or HaHa (as he is known), has been described as Australia’s most notorious and prolific stencil artist; attacking streets and galleries with his unique brand of art. Relying heavily on popular culture and Australian history, HaHa cuts stencils straight from newspapers and photographs. The self-taught, Melbourne-based artist is represented by three commercial galleries across Australia and produces lifelike images with intense accuracy.

Eddie Botha is a South African-born Australian artist (via Malaysia) who has been doodling all his life. Getting his first break drawing pictures for his school newspaper, he is basically untrained. While in school, Botha was forced to write with his right hand even though he is left handed. Now he uses both hands to produce his artwork. Inspired by pop art, impressionism, manga and steampunk, Botha’s work youthfully captures the colours of Africa, the vibrancy of Malaysia, and the natural surrounds of Australia.

Describing the work of my friend, Melbourne artist Gervaise Netherway, it’s hard not to notice the impalpable resemblence to the likes of Basquiat and Salvador Dali. Whether deliberate or not, he constructs that same surreal neo-impressionism. I can’t wait to hang one on my wall.

Seattle 100: Portrait of a City is in itself a humane blueprint to what is a rustling architecture. With the city as the basic foundation, 100 is the three-years long effort by renowned photographer, filmmaker and Seattle native, Chase Jarvis.

The book features a collection of black-and-white portraits and biographies of individuals harboring a place in Seattle, each defining the city’s different aspects from DJs, writers, musicians, artists, scientists, restaurateurs, entrepreneurs and more.

I met Aaron Craig at a festival some seven years ago and had no idea the kid was an artist. He told cracking tales and had wanderlust in his eye, a likable guy who was always planning an adventure. Since then, he’s lived in various cities around Australia and undertook a sabbatical across the globe, calling Canada home for several years. His travel updates were the sort you longed for.

He’d send amazing photos capturing moments in far-flung cultures and include shots of canvas creations fresh from his backyard. Initial surprise was overcome with anticipation, and I wondered when this backpacker would begin taking art seriously. Years later he’s back in his hometown of Newcastle, Australia, studying design and creating fine art and photography. Aaron was recently featured in Newcastle Regional Art Gallery’s Look See exhibition.
