Is an image a photograph if it wasn’t made using a camera? Photographer Alexander Harrington questions just that with his series Untitled I, comprising images that originate not via a camera, but via a computer with Photoshop. His reasoning: “If you ask most people what the difference between a painting and a photograph is, they would tell you that one is made with a camera and one is made with a brush, but I always think of an inkjet print as being a mechanical grid painting.

It’s still pigment in dots, just made by a machine. It doesn’t matter if you make it chemically or photomechanically or whatever.” Makes sense, though he might want to pick a fight with a dictionary next.

When checking out Mark Maggiori’s art, it takes you by surprise to hear that he’s French because his work feels so American. His edgy, brutally honest photographs go wonderfully with the paintings in his series, The Blessed Event, which asks the question: what would happen if Jesus was living with us? This is a pretty intense portrait of American ‘white trash’ in their daily grind.

The black and white photography of Andre D. Wagner creates a bold statement while maintaining a simple image. Wagner uses everyday lives and routines to perfectly portray different aspects related to humanity. He uses the language of expression to directly relate to his audience. The power of suggestion is forceful in his work, alongside the beauty in individualism. Simple yet bold, Wagner manifests prints specific to the realities life beholds.

More than 100 of the world’s most exciting and influential artists, illustrators and designers including Oliver Hibert, Tatiana Arocha, Insa, Stanley Chow, Kai and Sunny and Pete Fowler have taken a paper dog and made it their own as part of the two-year Gerald Project. Culminating in an exhibition currently at New York Design Week, the collaborative sculpture exchange is one of the most ambitious in the history of art and design.

Stood on four legs with his nose proudly pointed to the air, Gerald really is a dog like no other. Designed by British design house, Lazerian, the free standing model of a Bracco Italiano breed of gun dog made entirely of paper uses up to 88 individual components for each large format dog. His construction is a prime example great design giving strength and grace to the most unlikely and underappreciated of materials. Joining Lazerian to celebrate the completion of the project is James Cropper, the 170 year old British paper mill who will use their publishing experience to create a high quality, limited edition, large format hardback book featuring all 120 of the paper dogs alongside artist reflections on what the project and Gerald means to them.

We’ve seen many types of maps, and most of them share one characteristic: they are minimalistic, topographic representations of a particular physical area. Now Sohei Nishino has gone ahead to blow our minds with his spin on maps of cities he has visited. Comprised of his stash of photographs, these recreate the city as one large collage, and are intended to function as a accurate-to-memory record rather than a accurate-to-scale map. He has crafted at least 14 of these over the last decade or so. These are plain fascinating.

In my paintings, I combine the figurative and non-figurative to create a world that can only exist in a painting. I want to tell a story, visualize a feeling, or capture a certain atmosphere that can move the viewer. Sometimes the process is as important as the picture itself. The painting Mistranslation is based on a photo of a screen playing an old low-resolution TV commercial. This process has distorted the picture to such a degree that the characters have been transformed into somebody new, telling a whole different story.

It´s funny how popular TV shows can shed a new light on art. A very good example is the Black Acid Co-op installation from 2009 by the two US-American artists Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe. It´s their third collaborate project of alchemy in a modern context and community and basically a large scale installation of several rooms including a meth lab, commissioned by Deitch projects.

To enter the installation the visitor has to climb through a big hole in the wall and as soon as he/she is inside a hidden world of abandonment and decay opens up. The exhibition gives the “average” citizen the possibility to experience a sub-culture he is probably surrounded by every day without noticing and without even imagining that his neighbour might have a drug lab next door…
