After being locked up for 81 days in a secret location in China two years ago and not being able to reveal his work, Chinese artist Ai Wei Wei is back and this time he has gone big. Again. The Venice Art Biennale shows three large-scale works of the Chinese artist and activist: titled Bang, Straight and S.A.C.R.E.D. The works are a refurbishment of his days in detention, a kind of therapy or exorcism he had to do to get those endless days with nothing to do, sitting and waiting in a tiny room, out of his system.

This art movement, Object Trouvé, which started in the 1910s and which was officially coined by Marcel Duchamp in 1915, is still a very interesting and up-to-date way to create art. The main idea is to modify and convert found objects into pieces of art. From looking at Damion Silver’s series Assemblages, it’s obvious that he’s quite a fan of Marcel Duchamp. He honours his legacy by assembling unwanted wooden materials of different origins and shapes into unique three-dimensional masterpieces.

Standing below this incredible installation sculpture at Rice Gallery will make you feel like you’re standing under a dome of a thousand broken rainbows or bubbles. Though chain-link fences are something usually hidden, Soo Sunny Park imagined a reality that puts the wire structure on display.

Made up of 37 sections of fence, Park’s structure is suspended above the gallery in graceful arches and waves with lovely translucent sections of Plexiglas to catch and refract the light.

The little scales of Plexiglas interact with the light at different times during the day depending on the quality of light, so be sure to to visit twice.

If you want to know if art made out of concrete can look lightweight the answer is a resounding yes! Artist and designer Fabrice Le Nezet created a series of enormous installations made from concrete blocks tamed by colourful metal tubing. This series, Measure, is a wondrous combination of raw and industrial materials transforming into something nearly organic. And as the concrete is cased by the steel frames it actually gives the impression of being light and easy to handle, even though we’re talking about a massive weight that is almost impossible to lift.

Korean artist Bahk Seon Ghi has an eye for the sublime. His suspended sculptures hoist charcoal pieces up by thin nylon threads to form shapes that suggest they are more solid than they appear to be. While charcoal is seen in many cultures as being symbolic of purity and cleansing, Bahk apparently specifically chose it for the fact that it is really transformed wood.

Mexican artist Damián Ortega started out as a political cartoonist, but has since gone through down a decidedly artsy slant to comment on anything from consumer culture to perception. His 2007 sculptural series Controller of the Universe had him dissembling everyday objects like cars, and then freezing them in mid-air in an explosive motion. These are so beautiful.

Some people really know how to through a party, and this pool party is like no other you’ve seen. The savvy people of Red Paper Heart art studio filled a full sized swimming pool with 65000 ping pong balls. The floating installation featured sound activated lights to coordinate with music and beautiful synchronized swimmers performing graceful movements to match the light show. That’s what Swiss conceptual artist and sculptor Fabian Bürgy once said and still practices. His extraordinary digital creations really shift between real and unreal. For him, in this over visualized world, it’s the powerful images that are truly intimidating. Bürgy uses all kinds of things, like belts, dog tails and nails, to create his ‘slightly violent and disturbing process of transformation, misplacement and dysfunction of things’.

Anton Alvarez’s recent design for a thread wrapping machine is not only a stroke of engineering genius, but it’s an automated artwork generator, too. Alvarez’s device wraps objects in a tightly bound layer of glue-coated thread, creating architectural objects out of whatever materials you put through it. The various furniture pieces generated are just as durable as they are beautiful. I can only hope Alvarez’s prototype will be reproduced so that such designs will be available to a wider audience.

West meets East in these incredible bamboo sculptures by Tetsunori Kawana. Each huge structure in the Denver Botanic Garden is elegantly curved and winding. They were constructed by a painstaking process of splitting and bending each piece of bamboo. The installation is a growing changing thing. Though the bamboo is no longer living, it changes with the seasons, age, and weather. A gradual shift occurs as is begins drying out and changing color. Kawana’s attempt at recreating and manipulating nature is a fascinating concept

Stephen Knapp believes in the power of pure color and light. Though he describes his art as “light painting”, these brilliant light installations were created without any actual paint whatsoever. It’s all refracted white light and glass. Imagine the effects of a shattered rainbow being dumped haphazardly into an art gallery and you’ll have a pretty accurate mental image of being in the same room with one of the mind-blowing installations. These light paintings allow you to interact with otherwise unreachable color spectrums.

French artist Michel Blazy staged his Bouquet Final installation at a French medieval chapel with foam spewing forth from a metal structure that generates foam non-stop. It’s supposed to convey the message that art cannot be pickled and canned — it has to be experienced. Wonder if anyone skipped past through these skimpy Do-Not-Cross barriers to start a foam party. We definitely had that in mind.

Israel-born artist Yochai Matos, who is based in Tel Aviv, has a sense of humour. A number of his installations use fluorescent tube lights as a medium, such as Flame (Gate), which, when its set up in the woods, looks like a sneaky portal into another world. One of his recent works, You Are a Saint, arranges the tube lights to allow anyone to take a cheeky saintly self-portrait of themselves. It’s marvellous stuff.

Renowned Chinese artist Ai Weiwei’s latest installation at the Galleria Continua in San Gimignano consists of 760 bicycles stacked on a raised stage. Viewers can walk through and interact with the installation at various angles and perspectives because the bicycles are physically attached to each other, creating one single structure. As always, Ai Weiwei’s work is visually stunning and unique, and his exhibit can be viewed until February 16.
