Common Machine is a hot new media collective of artists, editors, filmmakers, photographers and producers. Based in Miami, with key collaborators in New York, the studio is headed by Brett O’Bourke, an award-winning journalist turned documentary producer who has since focused on producing web-based niche entertainment for corporate clients. Several Common Machine projects will be hitting the internets in the coming months, including a series of videos for a classic clothing retailer looking to rebrand, videos for several big name architects, to be released just before Art Basel Miami Beach, and the second installment of the video series it is producing for Lost At E Minor, the first of which — a profile on marionette maker, Pablo Cano — is above.
Just finishing at Brighton with a degree in Illustration, Katie Scott is one of my favourites from this year’s graduates. Her intricate watercolors resemble medical drawings, but with a closer look, reveal beautifully surreal diagrams of hybrid creatures. Read more
Yooouuutuuube is a mesmerizing site that divides your browser into hundreds of screens, each of which plays any YouTube video on frame later than the previous screen, resulting in a psychedelic experience bound to waste hours of your time.
Andrew Fagan, lead singer of The Mockers, the poppiest New Zealand band of the 80s, came around to my place once when I was an impressionable 10-year old with stars in my eyes and a head full of shiny, shiny melodies. Read more
The young architect Junya Ishigami is pushing the boundaries of the weightless aesthetic stream of architecture. Here, for the Kanagawa Institute of Technology, he has designed a glass and steel pavilion with a roof that floats on a sparse forest of thin steel columns or ‘flats’. Read more
Activists from all walks of life — architects, artists, children, students, skaters, and more — are documented on the Tools for Actions website, aiming to show us how, whether deliberate or not, the tiniest or the biggest project driven by the quietest or loudest voice can trigger radical change in today’s urban centres. French duo Trop Tard make straight-faced, Suicide-esque, synth-and-guitar electro tunes that sound like dark rituals performed in the catacombs beneath the streets of Paris. Repetitive, bleak, and cold, this is dance music for the shambling undead.

Pitched as ‘Ulterior Motives in Contemporary Art’, Disorder Disorder is running until November 14 at Penrith Regional Gallery. It’ll be well worth the trip out west of Sydney: the Australian, Japanese, American and European cast reads like a warriors of street art roundup and includes Mike Giant, Ed Templeton, Anthony Lister [artwork above], Ozzie Wright, and Jonathan Zawada.
