Ok, a confession: I once owned an enormous garbage bag full of Archie comics. Yes, a giant green bag bursting with all the antics of the Riverdale collective, whose squeaky clean adventures framed my earliest impression of life in the suburbs of America. It was all a long way removed from the bustling streets of inner-city Sydney. Yet somehow my pre-pubescent self developed quite a cartoon crush on Betty, the All-American girl next door. So it was with some shock that I read today that after years of facing the most pleasant choice in comic book history, Archie has finally decided which of his two female companions to call his own. Forever. Or for the next few issues at least. That’s right, Archie is proposing to Veronica in an upcoming issue of the magazine, and life in Riverdale may never be the same again.

Check out these crazy watercolor portraits of aliens, cyborg, and beasties. This weird but beautiful output is by A.E. Brown, aka MedusaWolf. These look like creatures from some distant planet, each with their own story and inner, um, demons. Read more

As a fan of art and classic pop culture, I’d like to bring Sebastian Krueger to as many people’s attention as I can. He treats the faces of aging rock stars like they are rugged landscapes. Both fluid and precise, his paintings have the natural beauty and depth of the Grand Canyon. Read more

Seldom has black humour been done so well. On the surface, this film about the everyday lives of some unusually mundane characters, sounds extraordinarily boring. But it is instead a cutting comment on the absurdity and drudgery of everyday life. The characters try to break out or change their lives without success, and the results are bleak and hilarious. Nestled in the hills of Napa Valley, Bardessono is the newest creation of eco-developer Phil Sherburne and architect Ron Mitchell. Completed just seven weeks ago, the luxurious inn and spa is currently pursuing Leed certification and includes rammed earth walls, water treatment systems, and solar and geothermal energy systems. The buildings were built to pay homage to the land, and include recycled cypress wood for the windows, doors, and floors. Read more

Our celebrity-saturated culture makes many of us irrationally hateful of the faces we see on our TV screens and magazine pages. Good thing there’s Celebrity PunchOut to let off some of that steam.

I adore the band Health and am left fascinated by this glamorously bouncy We Are Water remix by Canadian duo Azari & III, who have taken it to outer house-space. It’s pure 80s late night disco at its finest. Ghost Buster meets Short Circuit, anyone?

What a wonderfully grown up ethos of punk is to be found in the latest effort by New Zealand’s Stolen Girlfriends Club. I saw sequin, lace, leather, denim, tulle, rhinestone and what appeared to be heshen, breaking all the rules of taste but nevertheless making me very, very happy. Read more
