Rebel with a culinary cause Anthony Bourdain recently launched his first graphic novel, Get Jiro!, published by DC Entertainment’s Vertigo imprint. Co-written with Joel Rose, the tale takes place in future L.A. where foodie culture reigns and chefs run the place like crime lords. The protagonist is a sushi chef who’s so serious about serving only the good stuff (“No California Roll!!”), he rewards patrons who make pedestrian requests with some swift beheading. Fast Co.Create ran some pages from the graphic novel and the stylised illustrations by Langdon Foss are some gritty good stuff.
According to B.R. Meyers over at The Atlantic, there is a scourge of foodies looming over America. Foodies are bad because they fly to Vietnam for pho. All of them do, which is evil. But even if they stopped doing that, Meyers would still be mad because he hates that people enjoy food at all. Anthony Bourdain is the devil for encouraging people to love cooking, Michael Pollan is evil for making the elitist claim that fast food is bad for us.
