Be warned. Canadian songstress Anjulie’s voice usually stays low-to-the-ground, but sometimes, without warning, it will rise up nasally, and girlishly, giving you attitude. It’s an unlikely sound that seduces you in a chemical way, like a pheromone. It’s adamant about making sure you dance, so that even if you’re standing in line at the grocery store, you’ll still be rotating your hips in the shape of a pentagon. Directed by Adria Petty (Kings of Leon, Regina Spektor), the new video by Toronto R&B singer Anjulie is a ripper. The track, off her self-titled debut album, was created with her producers Colin Wolfe, who has worked with Dr. Dre, and longtime songwriting collaborator Jon Levine, keyboardist for funk-pop combo, The Philosopher Kings. We asked Anjulie to tell us how the song came to be: ‘Boom started with a conga loop that I found in a dingy studio in Toronto with my producer Jon on a wintery night in February, where we survived on nothing but raisins and pizza crust. I wrote it about someone I had a huge crush on and I wanted to express that moment when you hear their name or they walk into a room and your heart just drops into you chest. Austin-based Future Clouds and Radar, the eclectic art-pop ensemble headed by Robert Harrison, has recently released its sophomore recording, Peoria. Where their self-titled debut album showed Harrison as the central figure in a large musical cast, Future Clouds and Radar’s latest offering finds the core band focusing their kaleidoscopic vision into a single cinematic narrative about the illusory nature of mortality. Throughout, Harrison stays true to his genre-hopping eclecticism, leading the journey through a maze of fuzz-box vocals and ethereal keys.
