A visually stunning short 3D-animated film directed by Antoine Perez, Celine Desrumaux, Francois Pons and Gary Levesque. Yankee Gal took a year to complete and was produced at the always formidable French computer graphics school, Supinfocom.

Mural artist Blu made this stunning wall animation that has been dropping jaws across the blogosphere. It’s a much more ambitious film than the one he circulated online late last year, which says a lot, because that one was pretty freaking amazing as well.

Animator Mathieu Labaye created this short film in tribute to his late father, who had been in a wheelchair for the last 15 years of his life. The film starts out slow, but when it gets going, it’s simply beautiful. It’s reminiscent of Aeon Flux and Bill Plimpton’s work in many ways, but it has much more heart and a haunting atmosphere. This is definitely worth watching in full-screen mode.

Marshall Hook’s animated collage — Music Field — is made up of ‘found images, photography, CGI and illustration. It was mostly done in AfterEffects and Photoshop, with a bit of 3DS MAX’.

This beautiful animated short film by Éva Magyarósi was the winner of the Oberhausen Film Festival last year.

I went to see Persepolis with my mum. We don’t often get to see good films in theaters in Iceland, but once in a while film festivals take place here, and this time it was the annual French film festival. I’d been so excited to see this film ever since I heard it was in the making. Most people have probably heard about it — an animated film based on the comic books of the same name about a young girl growing up through turbulent times in Iran. My mum and I laughed and cried and ate popcorn. I want to see this film again.

If animated wall drawings of severed heads and insect men ejecting their brains from their craniums is what people produce when they have too much time on their hands, then we should do their laundry for them and cook them dinner so they’ll have even more time on their hands.
