Pandas in captivity are notoriously shy and selective when it comes to getting frisky. With female pandas losing their sexual appetite when they are just fertile for three days every year, a panda breeding and research centre in China decided to play a pair of pandas some panda porn — basically, footage of pandas mating in the wild — after previous unsuccessful breeding attempts involving Viagra and exercise.

Yes, there’s even a Wikipedia entry for ‘panda porn’. Pandas are a pampered bunch.

Spoiler ahead: owls behaving wickedly. This owl, as seen on a Japanese variety show, knows at least two ways to scare off other beaky threats: puff and fluff up (cute) or supershrink into what looks like a cross between Lord Voldemort and Megatron. It’s a hoot. According to another YouTube user who uploaded another clip of similarly, er, talented owls, this particular owl species might be Florida Eastern Screech Owls. Bird experts, anyone?

Idiotsis the Dutch artist duo Afke Golsteijn and Floris Bakker, whose work combines taxidermied animal parts with industrial or domestic materials. When Vimeo user Mark Peters built a torpedo rig for his GoPro camera and dipped it underwater 20 miles west of Santa Cruz, he didn’t count on a bunch of tech-loving Pacific white sided dolphins to show up next. While there’s been some controversy about whether the footage was CGI-rigged or secretly seeded by GoPro, there’s just no faking just how awesome dolphins are. When they’re not busy calling each other names, they are doing all manners of cool things like staging rescue efforts for fellow dolphins in distress in the waters off South Korea.

I discovered this from a Slate podcast a while back. Regardless if this is not demonstrative of an animals intelligence, I have a hard time believing that humans are the only beings evolving. I hope this expands our concepts of what is really happening around us.

British photographer Christopher Swann took these amazing shots of dolphins and sharks preying on mackerel of the coast of Azores. The frightened mackerel swarm into these giant glistening balls in order to protect themselves from the impending attack. In the end, the predators win out over the 30-foot wide ball of prey.

In case you haven’t heard about the bunch of whales who were spotted with a deformed bottlenose dolphin as part of the gang, hear it now: the inter-species meeting of mammals was sighted by behavioral ecologists from Berlin’s Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries about 15-20 kilometers off the Azores in the North Atlantic. The speculation is that the dolphin’s deformity probably caused it to fall out of favour with the other dolphins, which in turn led it to be adopted by the free-wheeling sperm whales.
