Witnessed From Afar is a showcase of artwork by Andrew Pommier, Irina Troitskaya, Karen Preston, Ken Garduno, Mel Kadel, Michael Hsiung, and Parskid: ‘evoking forgotten pains and philosophical yearnings, the artists contemplate the oddities of life and death with warmth and sincerity; yet always maintain their distance’. New York based artist Tara McPherson is a ‘painter, poster artist and freelance illustrator … creating art about people and their odd ways’. She has ‘painted comics and covers for DC Vertigo, advertising and editorial illustrations for companies such as Pepsi and Spin Magazine, and gig posters for rock bands such as Beck, Modest Mouse, Mastodon, and Death Cab For Cutie’. Canadian artist Andrew Pommier’s paintings are full of life and colour. As he told Design is Kinky, ‘I love looking at art that in my eyes is done well. When I draw or paint I want my work to be created with the idea that I’m pushing my technical abilities. My favourite artists are those that realize that technique — be it sloppy or tight — is as important as imagery. My own work comes from just exploring visual language. I like playing with icons and mixing relationships. Pen and paper is were I can explore ideas free from the weight of criticism. That’s what I love about drawing. It can be a way to work out an idea or it can stand alone as a completed piece of art’. [see also Neil Farber]
Thankfully illustrator Jerome Prieur didn’t develop too far beyond his high school obsession with cyborgs and quasi-medieval imagery — his notebooks for biology class must have been works of art unto themselves. Read more
Carmen Ortiz is a self-taught illustrator from Spain with a huge talent to feel and express faces of human soul. Her hand-drawing technique, using only black and white, makes her style unique and recognizable. She can distil a personality and tell a life story with just one image. Read more

The graduate exhibition of third year graphic design students at Sydney’s Design Centre is called 342 Seconds and relates to the estimated time required to view the show. The exhibition takes place on December 3 and looks to be well worth checking out, if these works by Jenny Lee [above] and Sean Batchelor [below] are anything to go by. The Los Angeles musician, Ariana Delawari — aka Lion of Panjshir — is half Afghan and half Sicilian and makes wonderfully enlightened weirdo folk rock. I hope she takes that as a compliment! Her music is delicate and powerful and she is a pure artist. Everything she does has that magic light in it. She made her new album partially in Afghanistan, and many of the lyrics deal with the continued oppression of people’s liberties by the Taliban.

I disagree, but the Tights are not pants manifesto is pretty funny. There’s some history and arguments on why tights shouldn’t be worn as pants, and a downloadable kit with printable flyers to spread the word. A commendable effort. Do you agree tights are not pants? I’m all for tights as pants, as long they’re, ahem, worn well.

The return of the Brionvega rr226
Italian brand Brionvega has resurrected the classy Radiofonografio piece first created in 1965. The updated version is just like the original turntable/radio unit, but also has a CD/DVD player.
A little infectious lollipop rock anyone? Feel free to embarrass yourself singing along at the stoplight. If the other drivers give you that look, roll down the windows and spread the love.
