With spring fully arrived, it’s brought with it the return of the Brooklyn Flea, a mecca for crafts, vintage and food. Having gone out of my way to attend the Fort Greene flea almost every Saturday since it began almost a month ago — to stuff my face with the myriad gastronomical indulgences available and peruse the amazing wares set out on folding tables throughout the courtyard of Bishop Loughlin Memorial High — I only wish that I had a larger belly and more disposable income. Paintings from Nicholas Aoki’s new solo exhibition, Goodnight; Sweet, Hearts blur two worlds — one of mortals and one of Gods, skeletons and creature spirits. The Toronto-based Aoki uses watercolors and acrylics to create rich landscapes that he layers with the characters in this journey to death. And while the paintings contain a dark subject matter, they also contain flashes of light — a glowing full moon, say, or lamp posts helping guide the way.

Where would we be without synths and drum machines? Probably still listening to Grateful Dead jams in the alleyways of Height-Asbury. Done well, the remix is a wonderful thing. Case in point is Royksopp’s rendering of the Kings of Convenience track I Don’t Know What I Can Save You From. And then there’s Riton’s version of the Mystery Jets song, The Boy Who Ran Away. A White Lines for the 21st Century? I think so.
