Guy, this is probably the closest thing you’ll find to a Batman utility belt. The Speakeasy Briefs — an invention dreamt up by best buds Jeff Schneider and Dan Goldman— are underpants that come with a private pocket for carrying whatever you can tuck inside. That includes a flask. That’s right — if you pledge $29 towards their Kickstarter fund, you’ll get to snare a pair of Speakeasy Briefs and a flask and (to quote these guys) “bring the party to your pecker”.

Yep, that’s Aurora, which is pink in natural light, but takes on an aquamarine glow in black light. While we’re skeptical you’ll see anything remotely like the Northern Lights when you’re done with the mix, you might still get a kick out of drinking stuff that glows in black light… although a vodka Red Bull might fix that too. Dayum.

The first lock, historians estimate, probably existed as far back as 4,000 years ago. Yeah, it can’t have taken long between owning stuff and having to beat off the grubby hands of other people who want that same stuff. Like, you know, your booze. Solution: a combination lock that works on wine and spirit bottles, so you can be sure none of your liquid joy slips out of the bottle when you’re away.
Jack Daniels has recently collaborated with a handful of talented artists and sign makers to put together five posters centered around the theme of independence. This project is so unique. The artists are really going back to the root of sign and poster making. Using traditional methods, the artists hand-carved wooden letters, hand-sketched drawings, and hand-painted phrases: things that you would call a lost art in today’s society. The final products are really amazing.

How amazing. Brooklyn-based company Bender Bound has a use for books, and it ain’t reading: it hollows out the tomes by hand and hides 250ml swing top glass flasks imported from Italy in them, so you can top these up with the tipple of your choice. You can choose from handcrafted law books, finance books, medical books, cook books, parenting books, dictionaries, or even send your personal copy of a hardcover book their way. See, drinking can be pretty intellectual.

Forget the licorice sickliness of pastis and the the deranging legends of wormwood-ridden absinthe, the new hipster drink of choice is Pineau de Charente. In almost as short supply (outside of southwest France) as absinthe, pineau is made from a blend of slightly fermented grape juice and the eau de vie of cognac.

Like wine, it has white, red and rosé variants, and all are usually served chilled. The taste, which varies markedly from maker to maker and with age, is sweet – with an edge. Rappers might get paid to shout out the virtues of ‘nyak’ – the big name cognac brands of Hennesy, Martel, Remy Martin and Courvoisier – but in Paris, it’s cooler to be seen swirling a tulip glass of this much cheaper more palatable drink. (Hint: start with the delicate rosé made by Feynard).

Cocktail in a bottle. You’ve seen them lingering on the store shelves. Overly sweet Pina Coladas stand next to sour Margaritas, all pre-packaged and ready to disappoint. Well, High West Distillery’s The 36th Vote Barreled Manhattan (say that 5 times fast) is looking to be the exception. Yes, it is a cocktail in a bottle but this Manhattan is made according to a pre-Prohibition recipe of rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters, which are mixed and aged together in a white oak barrel for three months. Hailing from Park City, Utah – better known as ‘where Sundance is held’ – this Prohibition-inspired bottle is gaining props for its spicy and herbal complexity. And at about $55 a bottle, a little complexity is certainly in order.

When scientist Raul Cano discovered 45-million-year-old yeast preserved in amber and brought it back to life, he did what anyone else would do: he brewed beer. He and fellow scientist Lewis ‘Chip’ Lambert partnered with brew masters Peter Hackett to found Fossil Fuels Brewery in order to market their unique brew. If you live in Northern California, see if you can get a hold of it and tell us how it is. Hopefully the yeast won’t go berzerk from the pressures of the modern world and rampage through North America, eating every simple sugar in sight.
