This has been the breakout kid in the world of 3D printing recently. Pirate3D wants to make 3D printing affordable and easy to use for all home consumers. Their solution is the Buccaneer, which allows you to do cloud printing and choose between working from a PC or mobile device.

It’s user-friendly as you can customize 3D objects without learning how to use 3D design software, and it’s also mess-free as it uses plastic printer cartridges. The printer is going for $347 on Kickstarter excluding shipping (compare this to MakerBot’s Replicator 2, which comes with a $2,199 price tag). The project reached its $100,000 goal in ten minutes and has already gone over the $500,000-mark.

3D printed clothing is a very nifty idea. But let’s face it, it usually ends up bearing an unfortunate resemblance to a science fair project. But throw in Dita Von Teese and 3D printed fashion becomes the sexiest thing around. Designed on an iPad and printed as 3,000 tiny individual parts, this dress is the first fluid, curve hugging 3D printed dress to grace a woman’s body.

Designer Michael Schmidt (yeah, Lady Gaga’s bubble dress designer) and architect Francis Bitonti knew exactly what they were doing when they chose to create it specifically for Von Teese. I mean, really, they designed a sculpture based on her naked body. And it still makes her look somewhat naked while wearing it. How could their plan have gone wrong?

Curious as to whether she’s wearing underwear with the dress? We may never know for sure, but the design of the gown did call for a nude corset to be added under the cage-like nylon pieces. So it gives the illusion of bare skin yet still prevents any (happy) “accidents” from happening during photo-shoots.

The secret to the actual construction of the dress partially lies with the New York 3D-print masters at Shapeways, and partially in the finishing process that called for 12,000 black Swarovski crystals to be placed on the tiny moving parts. And in case you were wondering, no, you can’t borrow the dress. No one but Dita Von Teese will ever get to flaunt this 3D printed wonder. And as she put it: ‘I’d like to see ‘em try.’

We’ve been going on and on about 3D-printing, but we still didn’t see this coming: yes, of all things, a 3D food printer. Er, why not just eat food? Mechanical engineer Anjan Contractor, who designed the printer, sees a future in printing out customized meals to help us all address nutrient deficiencies unique to us, and also minimalize food waste since the food cartridges used to print these layers of sugars, complex carbohydrates, protein or others can last up to 30 years.

Now, that sounds reasonable. Plus, the fact that the company behind it, Systems & Materials Research Corporation, just got a six-month $125,000 grant from NASA to create a prototype of the food synthesiser, only goes to show that this might just work out somehow.

Looks like we’re all going completely potty about 3D printing. Recently, our celebrity crush Dita Von Teese donned the world’s first completely 3D-printed dress, and even an entire building is slated to be made from 3D printing in the next year or so. What’s left?

Well, accessibility to the rest of us plebeians, that’s what. Which explains the deluge of 3D printing gadgets that are starting to flood the marketspace and calling out for a bit of crowdsourcing support. Take the 3D doodling pen which lets you doodle anything out of thin air — that is super cool. Or the Doodle3D, which lets you doodle first and then print out your doodle afterwards.

Pretty nifty too.

Or the RigidBot 3D printer which purports to be not just customizable, but expandable to fit any 3D prototyping needs you have. We like scalability. Or the Gigabot 3D for those with a huge, huge vision. Large-format printing sounds like the first step to our world domination plans. What can we say? We can’t wait to see 3D printing get even more accessible in time to come.

This looks like a whole lot of fun. The 3Doodler lets you draw anything you want, on and off the paper. You can actually draw your creations in the air. Using special technology that allows plastic to be heated and cooled within the pen, the 3Doodler makes it simple for anyone over the age of 12 to create amazing 3D drawings.

So how does it work. Simple (kind of): ‘As 3Doodler draws, it extrudes heated plastic, which quickly cools and solidifies into a strong stable structure. This allows you to build an infinite variety of shapes and items with ease! Most people will instantly be able to trace objects on paper, and after only a few hours of practice you will be able to make far more intricate objects’.

It’s no surprise that on Kickstarter, it’s already raised $1,200,627 pledged of its $30,000 goal.

If this is the future of architecture, the future should be here in, oh, about 18 months. That’s how long the world’s first 3D printed building — Janjaap Ruijssenaars’ Landscape House where floors climb, flip and loop to become ceilings in a mobius strip — is estimated to be completed. The gigantic D-Shape printer will be used to print the building’s hollow shells with a marble-like material, while concrete and fiberglass will be used to reinforce the structure. The cost? US$5-$6 million. The future isn’t cheap.

Scott Summitt, one of the world’s leading 3D printing and design experts, has just created a 3D-printed guitar. The guitar was printed from $3,000 worth of plastic with a wooden headstock, and surprisingly, it sounds pretty good too. Summitt partnered with 3D Systems to fullfil his childhood dream of creating his ideal guitar, and he hopes that in the near future people can use 3D-printing technology to create their ideal guitars as well.

It’s hard to know where to start with 3D Printing. I know one thing for sure, it is no doubt going to go down as the biggest damn thing since the invention of movable type. This new article claims that they can now print pharmaceuticals. Which, let’s face it, is just scary. I don’t want to imagine a world where kids are sitting around printing up cocktails of party drugs that they downloaded from the Internet. But apparently it’s coming.

As if there wasn’t already enough nonsense online for me to fritter my hard-earned cash away on! Now I’ve stumbled across Shapeways and, frankly, I doubt I’ll be able to hold off a purchase for much longer. Shapeways is the place to turn designs into reality.

It’s a great little start-up from New York that utilises 3D printing to help you make, buy, and sell anything you want: from a highly accurate replica movie prop, to a nostalgia baiting blast from your gaming past , to an iPhone case made from your favourite song on Soundcloud, to the just plain weird, pretty much anything goes as long as you can tool out the design on some kind of 3D software. If you can then Shapeways can take the design and turn around a product for you (in a variety of materials) in just under three weeks. If not, then just peruse through the multitudes of designs already created.
