The remarkable Bryan Ferry, frontman and songwriter for legendary late 70s/early 80s band Roxy Music, is back with a new studio album, Olympia, which drops on October 26. This is the first taste off it: the rhythmically propulsive Shameless.

Echo and the Bunnymen were spawned in the creative and fertile hub of Liverpool’s late-70s punk scene, borne from oft-discussed ambitions eventually called out. The three original members, who ‘didn’t really know what they were doing’, chose to perform — sink or swim — in support of Teardrop Explodes, and became cult icons; post-punk pioneers. Read more

Wow. My bellybutton sure has changed over the years. I was pretty close to being an outie when I was a kid, but as I’ve grown and gained and lost weight, the little ‘button’ has recessed and shrunk to the point where I’m an absolute innie. I feel like this realization has affected my sense of self. No one ever teaches you to clean your bellybutton, but it’s strange how you learn to do this all on your own as you mature. What? Metallica has a new album? Huh. I wonder if dolphins have bellybuttons. That’s a creepy thought.
I’ve plugged my buddy Andrew Liang before after he had a solo show at the Wind-Up Space in Baltimore, but I’ve been digging through his blog and finding incredible images I hadn’t seen before. Seriously, I am in awe of him. Read more
Beast is a new collaboration between the Montreal-based French producer, Jean-Phi Goncalves, frontman of the electro band Plaster, and singer Betty Bonifassi. Their sound inhabits a place where the cinematic grandeur of Portishead meets the immediacy of Rage Against the Machine. Bonifassi calls it ‘trip rock’, invoking the way haunting choirs and glitchy electronic bits run underneath saw-toothed bass and grinding guitars, and she may be onto something. You can download their single Mr Hurricane for free via the Music Download section of this site.
