Sonic the Hedgehog is celebrating his twentieth anniversary this year. First released on SEGA Mega Drive in 1991, the famous blue hedgehog has become a worldwide gaming icon from a time when you actually had to plug the controller into the console and if you wanted to play against someone you had to go and get the kid next door. Sacrilege! This collection of video game advertisements from the 1980s and 90s features many of the classic motion pictures of the time and their accompanying video games. Of course, the collection wouldn’t be complete without other childhood favourites like Super Mario, Donkey Kong, and my personal favourite, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Read more

Oh man, the 80s were fun. Back then it was all beaches and smiles, lightweight soft drinks and squeaky clean advertising. Somewhere along the way, the message was corrupted, and the beach bunny actresses and guitar shredder actors of that golden era of naivety were forever tainted with the pastiche of their weird TV legacies. My friend Hermonie Only is a bad-ass artist who seems to have a good handle on symbols and icons, using them boldly and unabashedly. Her abstract and geometric work also have a heft to them that make them stick in the mind even without literal, translatable meaning. Read more
Firekites, from small town Australia (Newcastle to be exact), are my new musical obsession, and have been since early yesterday when their song Autumn Story randomly burst into my headphones and latched itself deep into my inner ear iPod. I wish they’d been around when I last lived in Sydney; it would have been well worth the two hour drive north to see them play. The whole album (The Bowery) is beautiful, but this song especially rings out with poignancy. I love the subtle sound of the fingers sliding across the guitar frets, the gently whispered vocals, which hint at secrets and cheeky serenades, and the sense of soulful introspection that tangles itself elegantly amongst its minor chord tapestry.

If you come to Berlin, then I recommend this little shop, Dederon Design, specializing in stuff manufactured in, or inspired by, the former GDR (East Germany). Everything from ice cream cups to LP racks and toys. The woman running the shop even designs bags in some weird GDR-invented plastic material.

The return of the Brionvega rr226
Italian brand Brionvega has resurrected the classy Radiofonografio piece first created in 1965. The updated version is just like the original turntable/radio unit, but also has a CD/DVD player.
A little infectious lollipop rock anyone? Feel free to embarrass yourself singing along at the stoplight. If the other drivers give you that look, roll down the windows and spread the love.
