When I was a kid, I used to look forward to catching this Japanese variety show, Masquerade or 超級變變變 on TV every week. On it, contestants vy to perform their most creative illusionary skits with old-school techniques — like guys clothed entirely in black and shifting objects about. They almost always some up with the most imaginative and wacky ideas.

Thanks to the Internet, I was able to track some of these rad clips on YouTube. You have got to love the Japanese, really.

Patrick Priebe, who makes a business out of building laser light guns and gadgets, has a YouTube channel that come peppered with irate video text descriptions that go “DON’T ASK FOR PARTS PLANS TUTORIALS”. At first we wondered what was up with all that screaming, but if you take a look at one of his demo videos showing how the gadgets he builds actually destroys other stuff using nothing but light beams, you start to understand why.

It looks amazing, but it’s actually terrifying. These methane bubbles trapped in ice are a natural phenomena that occurs in arctic areas. This video of scientists igniting the gas shows just how potent this stuff is – and it’s everywhere in cold, tundra regions of the world. The problem isn’t that it’s stuck under ice; the problem is that global warming and melting of the ice will result in all this methane being released into the atmosphere – and it’s a greenhouse gas that’s 25 times more dangerous for the world than carbon dioxide.

You have to hear it to believe it. Porno Klan is a weird music project from a Brazilian producer that likes to mash-up pop artists like Beyonce with underground dirty Brazilian funk or carnival songs. Sometimes he even releases a music video to illustrate the lyrics. And to top that, he creates exotic 80s inspired images for each single.

Check his Beyonce Carnival Remix, Katy Perry Funk Mash-Up and this fantastic (and smoother) mash-up of Rihanna with Barry White.

You know those days when you’re sitting on the train after a hard day at work, literally unable to pull your phone from your pocket to change the song you’re listening to? Those days are over. Well, sort of. Japanese company Neurowear have developed a set of headphones and an iPhone application which combine to read your brainwaves and deliver music to suit your mood. All hands free, of course. The headphones even have built-in LED indicators which show your mood to those around you. I guess they know you get a bit touchy when you’re stressed.

The earnest enquiry is deliberately meant to be misheard — and it’s the first of a whole string of poop puns that run on for a good 35 seconds next (yes, Kmart wants you to know that you can ship your pants, your bed, your nightie, your drawers, anything at all). The video ad has chalked up over six million views on YouTube in just five days. Guess everyone digs some poop-related word humour.

This is a podcast. Interesting science makes us ecstatic, and these guys convey fascinating scientific information in such a deeply enjoyable way I’m surprised they’re not treated like rock stars. Of course, if we had our way a lot of not very well known people would be treated like rock stars.

When the UK Indie Trio The xx announced they were returning to Australia for a quick capital cities tour, I was more than a little excited. Trembling, in fact.

Having discovered them for the first time at Laneway Festival in 2010, The xx’s biggest challenge this time around was all about how to adapt to becoming the hottest act.

Could they retain the sense of intimacy that made them so special in the first place, while tailoring the live show to the size of venue their immense popularity now demands?

There were other problems – their shows sold out in around 15 minutes, and getting a ticket was luck of the draw.

Although there was skepticism around the venue choice in The Hordern in Sydney – howls of delight rang out across the sold out crowd as the dry ice surrounding the three shadowy figures evaporated to reveal a giant ‘X’.

Their isolated and emotive sounds filled the space, as Jamie xx’s multi tasking skills continued to amaze – playing keys, drum pads, percussion and steel drums.

The trio played a well-balanced mix between their self-titled first album and their recent release Co-Exist interspersed with a swoon worthy cover of King of Tomorrow’s ‘Finally’.
