Burlesque performer Dita Von Teese unveiled the world’s first completely 3D printed dress at the Ace Hotel in NYC. The dress was fully designed on an iPad by designer Michael Schmidt and architect Francis Bitonti, consisting of 17 individually-moving pieces that are held together by 3,000 joints. Designed expressly to fit Von Teese’s body, this dress looks incredibly futuristic and avant garde. So, is this the future of fashion?

Brooklyn-based photographer Van Sarki got the idea for his Burlesque Compere series when he realized one of his college friends was a burlesque star. He photographs beautiful dual portraits of the performers in their stripped down state and in their full elaborate burlesque getup. Plans for a book are in the pipeline too.

She designs her own ‘larger than life’ outfits for a mix of colorful, surreal and sexy characters. I couldn’t resist using some of these for a personal project I did at the beginning of this year.

Wellington is famous for its tiny, tucked-away bars, quirky cafes and galleries, fashion boutiques, award winning restaurants and buzzing nightlife. But what you may not know is that the New Zealand capital is also blessed with more bars, restaurants and cafés per capita than New York City. That’s right, it’s a thriving foodie (and drinkie) metropolis. We can’t show you all the 300 plus inner-city restaurant and bars, but here’s a sneak peak at some of Australian tourist, Patrick Stevenson — aka The Hipster’s — favourites.

Matterhorn [pictured above and below]

A local institution on Cuba Street, Matterhorn is known as the favoured local bar for Wellington’s chic crowd. Not only loved by the locals, Matterhorn was crowned as the Best Bar in New Zealand three years in a row from 2006-2008. You’ll find this funky haunt behind an inconspicuous sign down a dark alley way on the oober cool Cuba Street and is open throughout the day for coffee, lunch and dinner, and is known to host regular live music events.

You could be mistaken for thinking you’ve stepped right back into the 1920s, with Hawthorns gentleman’s club style retreat escorting bar goers back into time where poker, cocktails and big-band medleys rained supreme. Hula hoopin, burlesque dancers, rollerskating ukelele orchestras, indie rock bands, limbo experiments…no you’re not at the local circus just at the very hip and very unique Mighty Might Bar. On any given night you can expect that something extra from Wellington favourite haven of kitsch. Just a few doors down and a flight of stairs up from the Matterhorn, Mighty Mighty is a local for locals and a mash of extremes.

Shien Lee, the glamourous mastermind behind Dances of Vice knows just how you feel. Since 2007, Shien has been bringing her sparkle to the nightlife of New York, to create fun, memorable events that attract people from all walks of life.

Each event comes with a theme and Lee carefully curates the acts who will lend their talents to each one. Enthusiasts from around the world arrive in elaborate costumes to be dazzled by burlesque performers, vaudeville acts, and entertainers of various other stripes. You never know who you’ll run into there and I’ll never tell. I can also guarantee that you’ll never forget.

I’ve been to Woodford before. That’s why I’m going again this year. It’s a music and fringe festival all in one, with only one ticket. Well, there are day or season passes, but the idea is that one ticket gets you access to everything. So no messy ticket decisions. With over 400 acts from December 27 to January 1st.

So what to expect? Musical acts include Gotye, Xavier Rudd, Eagle and the Worm, Jordie Lane, Husky (video above), a heap of international acts, as well as many others.

There’s also Burlesque, a green debate titled, “The Plutocrats Now Run The Country,” as well as comedians, folk musicians, workshops, and a host of insightful lectures.

Also included is The Dreaming festival, which involves the planets’ oldest cultures sharing their timeless traditions and contemporary performing arts, all at The Dreaming’s dedicated venue, BlakDramatics. The Dreaming Gallery will then be offering workshops and exhibitions, while The Dingo Café hosts discussions and the Village Green dance performances.

The theme this year is Pieces of the Puzzle. Festival Director Bill Hauritz said: ‘Our beautiful planet is in need of some nurture and, like the festival, our people are the custodians If everyone can bring their little piece of the puzzle, the collective contribution would be special. It’s sort of like saving the world, one fantastic party at a time’.

You don’t even have to be a hippy to enjoy it. Promise.
