Over the past couple of years, the world hasn’t been short of tumultuous, large scale protests. From the Occupy Wall Street movement to the overthrow of leaders in Tunisia, Libya, Egypt and Yemen in what’s been termed the Arab Spring, the fight for democracy across the globe has not been a silent one. The International Centre of Photography in New York is currently hosting an exhibition aimed at generating conversation about these incredible events. Work on show will be from a number of different photographers all from the centre’s own alumni, providing an incredible stretch of diversity in how the movements are portrayed. If you’re hungry to understand the world beyond your western bedroom, this unearthing exhibition will not be one to miss.

American artist and author, Molly Crabapple, took part in the one-year anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street Movement last week which saw Lower Manhattan once again transformed into a city under siege. Crabapple was ‘inspired to see people care passionately about inequality issues’ and rallied with thousands of other protesters. Like many, Molly was arrested and held for 10 hours in a prison cell. ‘Getting arrested for a social protest is like being put through aversion therapy’, she noted. She has since produced illustrations describing the experience, including her arrest, and promoting the ethos of the movement that has won her over. ‘I would protest again’, she says.

You can even check out some of these locations in 3D. Most of the locations are large metropolitan areas with a lot of action. Tune into the Austin, TX, stream to check out the madness going on at SXSW, laugh at tourists tooling the corners of Time Square, or catch up with the occupy movement on Wall Street. The majority of these cams are solar powered. Cool beans, man.

It’s been really hard for me to put into words all the things the #OWS movement means to me, but this blog post aptly expresses many of the core aspects I see in the movement. This quote in particular resonates with me: ‘Other models of spatial production, and indeed, even of reality creation – based in collaboration, smaller in scale, briefer in time, and unfolding from a ground of love, not fear – have the potential to defuse the political control over the built environment. Inhabitation is speech, and it can create new realities. The method is less faith, and more magic, and watching this method deployed, it’s hard to argue against the message that another world is possible’.

I visited the Occupy Wall Street protesters yesterday at Liberty Plaza Park and drew every placard I could find on display. Here are the results: high resolution A2 posters for free use. Just download and print in black and white variants.

I’ve been fascinated with the Occupy Wall Street protests as they started upon my arrival in New York. So I was able to witness the graffiti advertising and the movement around the subway carriages and its progress over the weeks up until the marches with the Unions.

However, as a visitor, I’ve felt quite distanced from it. So I went down today to talk to some of the protesters and see for myself what was going on. It’s a strange part of town to be giving talks as people rush back and forth on the street and I wondered how much of what they were trying to communicate reached people. These placards are their own headlines and often they’re just as ambiguous, funny and deliberately provocative. Hopefully this collage gives some sense of the atmosphere and the intentions on Wall Street at a single moment in time.
