With an agenda to push the boundaries and bring a younger voice to Australian TV, SBS 2 launched this week and looks set to unleash a unique perspective on edgy culture and comedy, travel and sports. This is a very welcome addition to Australian television, offering viewers ‘free-to-air and Australian premiere content including the channel’s first commissioned program’, The Feed, which will provide a fresh take on breaking news stories at 7.30pm and 8:30pm daily – stay tuned for the full show in late May. We’re also particularly buzzed about four shows that SBS 2 are going to be screening:

* Community: a cult comedy reminiscent of Arrested Development and Parks & Recreation and starring the inimitable Chevy Chase
* Russell Howard’s Good News: stand up comedy meets Letterman meets Colbert. Yes, we’re intrigued too.
* Don’t Tell My Mother: a fun travelogue set in dangerous places around the world and digging deep for the hidden treasures of the cities uncovered.
* Graffiti Wars: A documentary about street graff that features Banksy, airing April 4th. Yup, that’s right, Banksy himself – don’t miss it!

The style might be identical to Banksy’s, and in Norway there is this guy who calls himself DOLK. This, however, was made by Skurktur, an art collective based in Trondheim, Norway. Skurktur’s street art is teeming with social commentary and satire, which is in keeping with the M.O. of the great Banksy himself.

French art director Christophe Pilate had the interesting idea of taking Banksy’s street art and reinterpreting it in a new and more commercial way. Pilate logically assigned brands to Banksy’s art, creating unique print ads for the corresponding brands. So, do you think Banksy himself would approve?

I recently visited The Wellington Club in the heart of Knightsbridge, London, for a magazine launch in which my artwork was featured. Decorated with original works by Damien Hirst and Banksy, hosted by a DJ who must surely have hijacked my iPod playlist, and designed on themes of decadence, promiscuity and urban rebellion, treading into The Wellington was like an electric reunion with a long lost lover I’d never known – one who, for the foreseeable future, I’d treasure with all my heart.

All over Innsbruck, Austria, a mysterious man is taking photos with a lampshade on his head to, well, brighten your day. Who is he? Well, it’s not quite a Banksy mystery, but the mystery man is putting more on Facebook each week.

Last May, during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Banksy’s scathing critique of slave labor-like conditions in Britain’s sweatshops appeared on the side of a London shop. Now, having being chiseled from the wall of the store, it is currently being auctioned off at Fine Art Auctions Miami and is estimated to sell for between $500,000 to $700,000 by the end of the week. According to Fine Art Auctions Miami’s website, the Banksy is being offered by a reputable, anonymous collector. So, since Bansky created this piece for the community, is it right for it to be bought and owned by one individual person? Let the debate begin.

Graffiti and street art have always been transient forms of self-expression. Deemed by many to be mere acts of vandalism, the artists’ work generally exists only for a very short period of time (unless we’re talking Banksy, Bambi or Roa), before being washed away in the next public clean-up.

There is something particularly candid about this type of art created far from the public eye, in backstreets and alleyways. It’s as if it holds a dirty mirror up to our society. Gavin Hammond, whose favourite subject is the capital of England (we posted his London in Puddles series earlier this year), surely feels the same way. In his lomo series Lost Street Art of London, he has made it his mission to capture the hidden face of the city, knowing full well that in a few weeks’ time, most of it will be gone.

Unurth is a website dedicated to global street art, run by Sebastian Buck from Los Angeles. The selection is curated from around the world – Roa, Vhils, Escif, and the very prolific graffiti artist Banksy. It’s been around for years, so there’s a good chance that you may have come across Unurth when you were looking for street art online. Visitors are also encouraged to submit art via e-mail, Twitter, Facebook and ffffound! It really is an awesome website where inspiration will strike.

Now this is a super neat idea. The Walls Notebook contains not blank pages, but somewhat blank, unblemished walls of New York City that beg for a Banksy or two. Now you can live your graffiti artist ambitions in these pages and doodle away without having to skulk around and stencil by moonlight.

New work by the renowned street artist, Banksy, has recently appeared in London. His Olympic-themed work is called Hackney Welcomes the Olympics and Going for Mould, and both of these stencils are full of Bansky’s signature social commentary.

Unfortunately, London authorities are ridding the streets of graffiti in preparation for the London Olympics, so Bansky’s new work might not be up for long. The prospect of Banksy’s work being erased has caused a debate about what kind of graffiti is considered art. When Banksy’s work was painted over in 2007, it caused serious backlash from the public. Hopefully London authorities will see Bansky’s art as edifying, rather than destructive.

Banksy strikes again, this time in his home town of Bristol. Though there are suggestions now that the work is actually by Incwell. Hmmm. Regardless, this representation of the Queen as the (in)famous Ziggy Stardust appeared on a wall on Upper Maudlin Street, near the Bristol Children’s Hospital, just in time to commemorate Her Majesty’s Jubilee. That elusive street art urchin (and we mean that in the nicest possible way), Banksy, has struck again in London, with a new artwork mysteriously appearing on the wall of a shop on Whymark Avenue, Turnpike Lane. As is to be expected, the street art sends a subtle social message, though so subtle in this case that Banksy-philes are torn over whether it is criticising the upcoming Olympics, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee or last summer’s riots.

The contemporary and elegant Blackman, in Melbourne, is the newest hotel in the Art Series Group. As is the theme of the Art Series, the hotel celebrates one of Australia’s most influential artists: Charles Blackman. Having visited The Cullen six months prior, I was taken by the way an artist’s work can so significantly change the feel of a room.

While The Cullen had a darker undertone, The Blackman felt quite dreamy and magical as a result of the artist’s unique take on Alice and Wonderland present in every room and corridor. It was hard to miss Blackman’s true romantic and whimsical nature. Positioned on bustling St Kilda Road, The Blackman is well situated for both business and leisure: a stones throw from Melbourne’s CBD and its iconic laneways, a leisurely stroll away from the Botanical Gardens, and a short tram ride to shopping meccas, Chapel and Greville Streets.

Welsh four piece Islet’s new video off of their latest album, Illuminated People, reminds me of some kind of neon knick-knack episode of Antiques Roadshow. The video is a mish-mash of animation techniques and tricks including (one of my personal favourites) strata-cut. Groovy!
