Half a year ago, I found myself involved as the director of photography in a short video production. The project was called Musa, directed by WCP collective, and the aim was to transpose feelings and emotions such as love and rage. Her take on the movie is hilarious: instead of going into the details of plot line and symbolism, she gets hung up on questions not addressed in the movie like, Is Neo straight or gay? And the poor woman admits to having to close her eyes at different points. Oh mother!

Patrick Priebe, who makes a business out of building laser light guns and gadgets, has a YouTube channel that come peppered with irate video text descriptions that go “DON’T ASK FOR PARTS PLANS TUTORIALS”. At first we wondered what was up with all that screaming, but if you take a look at one of his demo videos showing how the gadgets he builds actually destroys other stuff using nothing but light beams, you start to understand why.

Texting is so last decade. Why not dance your message instead of typing it? Thanks to the Dance Dictionary compiled by PUMA, normal words can be translated into sly dance moves. I discovered the anime series Berserk many years ago through a friend and I was immediately hooked. It was made in the 90‘s and based on the Manga by Kentaro Miura. In my opinion, it’s one of the greatest stories ever told. Demons, swords, violence, amazing character development… what more could you ask for? Berserk also introduced me to two great Japanese bands, Penpals, who do the opening theme ‘Tell Me Why,’ and Silver Fins’ ‘Waiting So Long’, the closing theme.

When you send a box off to be shipped, it disappears for a while, lost in the process of being handled and moved by a dozen different postal workers. But what actually happens between the time you mail it off and your friend receives it? Ruben van der Vleuten wanted to know just that. So this video project, From A to B, was born.

A package was mailed off with a tiny camera inside. The camera was programmed to shoot a three second video every minute, and a little longer if the box was actually moving. And voila! We have a behind-the-scenes look at where boxes actually travel to before they come to our houses.

Berlin-based artist Thilo Frank has this fascinating installation work, The Phoenix Is Closer Than It Appears, a 4m x 4m x 8m room that is entirely lined with mirrors and lit with streaks of neon green. It looks like it came straight out of The Matrix. Hmm, looks really cool, but we wonder if people can find the door to get out after stepping in.

Here’s a video that I found recently that I thought was really inspiring. The video has great production value and was thoughtfully put together. Going on long rides in bad weather with friends is one of my favorite things to do in life. This video did a great job of capturing the essence of mild suffering on a bike. The company that made the video is Rapha: they make simply designed cycling apparel and clothing.

Cassandra Brooks, a Stanford University PhD student who is now blogging onboard a research cruise in Antarctica, recently posted an intriguing time-lapse video montage of its icebreaker, Nathaniel B. Palmer, making its way through the Ross Sea.

Watch out for the part where Brooks goes ‘Sometimes, icebergs threaten to barricade us, other days we easily dodge them’. It sounds like it could almost be a metaphor for life and its difficulties.

‘I knew I wanted to work with Johnerick as soon as I met him’, says New York-based singer-songwriter David Bronson about animator Johnerick Lawson and his contribution to the new music video for Bronson’s song Outside. Johnerick’s work is a creative mixture of animation techniques that compliments the song’s themes of inner reflection. ‘Who can say what’s good for each of us, besides each of us?’ Bronson explains. ‘How strong do you have to be to listen to what you feel, despite what others may say to the contrary? And yet, we’re still hopelessly reliant on each other. That’s just the way it is’.

So apparently Batman is not only working hard to keep Gotham safe and orderly, but he’s also picked up a side job keeping the US Army in line. Bagram Batman shows up in several of their training videos to combat laziness, sloppiness, bad manners, and idiocracy.
