Do you want a practical way to feed the homeless? Take a look at Chope Food for the Needy’s facebook page. This movement teaches average people how to help the needy. All you really need to do is talk to your favorite food vendor, buy an extra meal or two, and ask them to give it to someone in need. Not only are you helping to feed the needy, but you’re also empowering someone to make a difference.

Did you ever use an empty bottle to make a shaker or a toy as a kid? What about a boat? 600 littered plastic bottles were used by Tom Davies, a New Zealand native living in Fiji, to create this boat. In Tom’s tests, the boat can hold up to three big Fijian men. The plastic bottles were glued together to a layer of foam underneath. The boat measures 4.5 meters long and 1.4 meters wide. Now if only we could turn our landfills into raft making factories.

It’s so good you want to eat it. They’re also on a mission: to get rid of single use plastic in the personal care industry. In a sure-enough short time they’ve created a thriving business that provides a living wage for a growing group of employees in WNC while also replacing nearly 20,000 plastic packaged products with their biodegradable tubes. From their their website ‘It’s a Goliath world, but we found our slingshot’.

Marcos Proença was born in Sorocaba but moved to São Paulo in 2001. Over 20 years, he has become one of the most sought-after hair stylists in the luxury market in Brazil and also a pioneer for creating the first eco-friendly salon in the country, launched November 2009. His place offers an unique experience combining beauty and elegance and has innovated with sustainability by contributing effectively to the low use of energy and water, selective garbage collection, LED lights, and large windows in the architectural design which offers constant natural lighting for the interior of the building.

The use of Marmo Glass (compacted powder) in the countertops and furniture is an important aspect of the landscape design which also comes with a garden where the clients can be catered to indoors or outdoors. Not to mention that they have one of the best pineapple juices around.

We are told on a daily basis to recycle and reuse and one Ohio based artist has done just that. Mark Langan takes supplies from his trash and the neighbourhood, reusing cardboard and reclaimed materials in order to create his art. Corrugated Art, as named by Langan, uses a material for which it was not purportedly intended. As well as his own collection, he has a huge range of clients who commission individual logos and signs, many made from their own products. It may just inspire us to get creative with our trash.

2000 recycled shipping pallettes and hundreds of volunteer labour later, Gap Filler recently announced that the Summer Pallet Pavilion is now open for business.

The quirky outdoor amphitheatre will be used for a whole host of events, from live music (now that the majority of the city’s music venues are closed following the 2011 earthquakes) to community events – the team at Gap Filler are leaving it up to the community to decide how they want to use it.

The pavilion was built over 6 weeks, powered by the amazing team of dedicated volunteers and help from local businesses. We feel honoured to have joined other volunteers to have made this project possible, and to be able to help out our friends in Christchurch.

And the benefits aren’t immediately tangible, are they? To work around this mindblock, Copenhagen-based creative agency Anew’s awareness campaign for a heating and energy recycling company got them setting up a pop-up pizzeria and using that as motivation for getting people to think about reducing their power consumption. The energy saved then went towards serving up hot pizza, so there was more pizza with more energy savings. Fun!

Have you ever imagined a world without a refrigerator? Korean designer Jihyun Ryou certainly believes that we can survive in this world without relying on them. Save Food From The Fridge is a project about traditional oral knowledge, which has been accumulated from experience and transmitted by mouth to mouth.
Bah, humbug! Did Willy Wonka make his way to Antarctica or what? Oyvind Tangen, a Norwegian sailor, was on board a research vessel 1,700 miles south of Cape Town and 660 miles north of the Antarctic a few years back, when he spotted the striped eye-candy floating on the waters. The stripes are formed naturally over centuries. Nature clearly got the memo about nautical stripes coming back in season.
