I’m usually not big into recycled jewelry, but these crystal pieces that won the Inhabitat’s Spring Greening contest are pretty clever. Though a lot of recycled material jewelry has an unfortunate resemblance to the trash it was up-cycled from, these crystal earrings bear very little resemblance to the CD jewel cases they began life as. This is some of the most successful recycled jewelry I’ve found.

Did you ever use an empty bottle to make a shaker or a toy as a kid? What about a boat? 600 littered plastic bottles were used by Tom Davies, a New Zealand native living in Fiji, to create this boat. In Tom’s tests, the boat can hold up to three big Fijian men. The plastic bottles were glued together to a layer of foam underneath. The boat measures 4.5 meters long and 1.4 meters wide. Now if only we could turn our landfills into raft making factories.

Air Fuel Synthesis generate energy from non-fossil fuel based carbon dioxide. And they believe the solution to creating clean energy can be pulled out of thin air. Literally. They propose making hydrocarbon fuel by taking carbon dioxide and water from the air and forcing them to react together. The resulting fuel production and fuel combustion will be carbon neutral.

SkinFare is a small company out of Western North Carolina that makes an organic body care coconut oil stick in biodegradable paper packaging. It’s so good you want to eat it. They’re also on a mission: to get rid of single use plastic in the personal care industry. In a sure-enough short time they’ve created a thriving business that provides a living wage for a growing group of employees in WNC while also replacing nearly 20,000 plastic packaged products with their biodegradable tubes. We’ve seen at least one Renew bin on the streets of Singapore, while London already has a 100-strong army to tackle the problem of free papers littering its streets. Equipped with wifi, the bomb-proof bins even have their own programming (watch the Singapore channel here) produced by an in-house editorial team.

We are told on a daily basis to recycle and reuse and one Ohio based artist has done just that. Mark Langan takes supplies from his trash and the neighbourhood, reusing cardboard and reclaimed materials in order to create his art. Corrugated Art, as named by Langan, uses a material for which it was not purportedly intended. As well as his own collection, he has a huge range of clients who commission individual logos and signs, many made from their own products. It may just inspire us to get creative with our trash.

During our recent trip to Christchurch, we were lucky enough to be able to participate in a voluntourism project, run by Gap Filler (the guys behind the Dance-o-mat and a whole bunch of other equally fun projects!)

2000 recycled shipping pallettes and hundreds of volunteer labour later, Gap Filler recently announced that the Summer Pallet Pavilion is now open for business.

The quirky outdoor amphitheatre will be used for a whole host of events, from live music (now that the majority of the city’s music venues are closed following the 2011 earthquakes) to community events – the team at Gap Filler are leaving it up to the community to decide how they want to use it.

The pavilion was built over 6 weeks, powered by the amazing team of dedicated volunteers and help from local businesses. We feel honoured to have joined other volunteers to have made this project possible, and to be able to help out our friends in Christchurch.

‘Use energy wisely’. ‘Save the Earth’. ‘Protect the environment’. Makes sense, but these pro-eco slogans can get a tad preachy. And the benefits aren’t immediately tangible, are they? To work around this mindblock, Copenhagen-based creative agency Anew’s awareness campaign for a heating and energy recycling company got them setting up a pop-up pizzeria and using that as motivation for getting people to think about reducing their power consumption. The energy saved then went towards serving up hot pizza, so there was more pizza with more energy savings. Fun!

Urban Air, a public project initiated by artist Stephen Glassman, started out as a studio artwork, but might just eventually make it out into the freeways of Los Angeles, followed by other cities around the world, if it manages to secure $100,000 of funding on Kickstarter by Dec 11. Basically the idea is to transform billboard space into bamboo gardens. Floating greenery instead of ads: it’s a beautiful idea.

Bah, humbug! Did Willy Wonka make his way to Antarctica or what? Oyvind Tangen, a Norwegian sailor, was on board a research vessel 1,700 miles south of Cape Town and 660 miles north of the Antarctic a few years back, when he spotted the striped eye-candy floating on the waters. The stripes are formed naturally over centuries. Nature clearly got the memo about nautical stripes coming back in season.
