With the Great Gatsby movie hitting theaters, there’s been a renewal of interest in the fashion of the 1920s. Suddenly there are a whole lot more dames sporting the iconic bob haircut, while even Brooks Brothers released a line of shirts meant to mimic Gatsby’s own fashion. A new haircut would cost maybe $50, a shirt perhaps $100, but how much would it cost to actually be J Gatsby?

According to this infographic by Nickolay Lamm, you can expect to pay about $34.3 million. And that’s with a pretty tight budget of $250,000 to actually throw his monumental parties. Now I understand why all Gatsby’s friends were suspicious of his fortune.

When Latin American supermarket chain Exito launched a seven-layered water bottle that preserves the taste of water in it, they also got ad agency Sancho BBDO Bogotá to come up with this series of print ads featuring just what the product won’t do. Clever.

In most theaters, you can expect to see the same, mass-produced movie posters. They don’t vary at all because essentialy they’re carrying the movie’s brand. But in some countries that lack the money for the legal rights to the movies brand, custom illustrated posters still flourish. Check out these illegally produced movie posters from foreign countries. The artists who illustrated these posters have complete free reign to design scenes that may not even apear in the actual movie. They’re way more creative than the official posters.

This stylish light fixture literally folds up into a little bag just like a tent. JEAHNA is all the nostalgia of tent camping repackaged as a gorgeous light for your house or gallery. The lightweight, nylon constructed lamp comes in three different sizes ranging form 1.5 to 5.5 metres in diameter. Designed as a collaboration between Johan Carpner, Alexander Lervik, and Swedish tentmaker Hilleberg, this light is modern and convenient.

Kirk Wallace’s father once told him that he’d like a tattoo of crop circles on his forearm when he gets better from his sickness. When he passed away in Jan this year, Wallace, who is an illustrator and graphic designer, started sketching as a sort of tribute to his dad. He didn’t stop working on the design until a month or so.

Eventually he transformed the understated design to his own arm. As Wallace explained it, “The crops are viewed from 90°, then flipped to a birds eye view, and back to 90. Crops spelling ‘dad’ and above, the beginning of the sky which I plan to expand on later on to space and the universe.” It’s simple and just beautiful.

French multi-disciplinary designer Arik Levy’s first love is industrial design, and it shows. On his bio, he’s quoted as saying, “Life is a system of signs and symbols where nothing is quite as it seems”, which pretty much sums up his ace designs for VIBIA’s Wireflow light fixtures. Constructed out of thin rods with LED lights at the ends, these deceptively flat fixtures resemble wireframes more than anything else.

I am a huge fan of designer toys and this one has just got me excited. Inspired by the Munny (a white moulded figurine that you can add your own designs to), the Fonzo is a 6″ tall DIY figure brought to life by Venezuelan designer toy outlet, Freak Store. Trivia: the Fonzo is based on the store’s owners French bulldog!

In 2011, Ogilvy and Mather Dubai created a series of print ads for Reporters Without Borders, an international non-profit organisation that promotes and defends freedom of information and freedom of the press, as part of their annual campaign, Censorship Tells The Wrong Story.

Each photo was altered using strategic pixelization to change perception and add new meaning. The campaign has helped spark a worldwide discussion about the issue. It also generated more than 25 million hits and has won several awards, including the Bronze Press for Magazine Product and Service at Cannes Lion International Festival of Creativity 2011.

Drawing statistical data from Data.gov and CIA World Factbook about migration, population density, temperature, UV radiation, GDP, and transport, Dutch designer Reineke Otten collaborated with LUST designers to translate these stats into a graphic code with eight overlapping layers. Each layer represents a factor influencing the composition of skin tones in that particular place. Beautiful.
