I really love the design lines of Vanmoof bikes. As it is with a lot of great design, a key feature of the bike is what’s not in the product: no gears; no hand-brakes (remember those awesome back-brakes from your BMX as a kid? Well, they’re back!). The lights are built-in and charged via USB or the sun. Damn, I really want one.

There’s no easy way to say this, but too many blokes who care about fashion end-up looking like kids down at the beach. What looks okay when you’re a teenager just doesn’t cut it once you reach a riper age. To address this gap in the market, new Australian label The Rocks Push has launched a range of well-fitting men’s beach shorts. Read more

Following on from her brother’s solo album, Australian singer-songwriter Julia Stone has released her own debut album, The Memory Machine. The songs were all written in New York last year while she was in between Angus & Julia Stone tours. These songs could easily have appeared one of the duo’s album. However, having only Julia Stone’s voice inevitably leaves it sounding more pared back and, in keeping with the album cover art, it also has a darker sound than the brother-sister act does.

Further, the seventh studio album from the Chemical Brothers, marks the return to the classic, elegant hooks that set the earlier Chemical Brothers’ albums apart. Further brims with epic tracks that transport you to those great days which turned into epic nights. For me, that’s long, unplanned London summer days. This is an album for close listening and reckless dancing.

I’ve just returned from a well earned holiday at Heron Island, a natural coral cay off the coast of Queensland. We arrived after a two hour boat trip from Gladstone, and departed with a 30 minute helicopter trip. We walked around the island most days, the trip taking a leisurely fifteen minutes. Read more

It’s midwinter in Sydney and I’m getting over my third or fourth cold. I need a holiday. And Heron Island, 72km off North Queensland, is booked in to do the trick. Located on a coral cay, there’s diving from your door, and as it’s a protected habitat, there’s a wide array of wildlife — including nesting turtles and an abundance of Australian birdlife. I’m counting the days. Read more

Mexican soft drink brand Jarritos has been added to the menu at all Mad Mex locations in Australia. The drinks taste real nice, but we like most the colours and classic bottling even more.

So I’ve had this idea for a reality TV show: ask a well known musician or producer to re-record a classic hit of the past. How would, for instance, My Sharona sound if recorded today using today’s production approaches and music styles? I reckoned it’d be an interesting show. Read more

Sin Nombre is a beautiful film depicting the epic quest of two people trying to flee the brutal and gang-controlled world of central America. The film offers a shocking glimpse into the brutally violent world of the Mara Salvatrucha gang, while contrasting this with the stunning terrain and colours of the beautiful land they travel through. And ultimately it’s a film about life, and what we make of it, and how we redeem ourselves from our past.

It’s crazy that we’re so reliant on cotton for our natural fibre needs, given that it’s environmentally heavy and requires massive amounts of water. Give me wool any-day. Or banana fibre, especially now that aussieBum have launched a new range of men’s underwear in this unique fabric. Banana fibre is made from the bark of the banana tree and possess wonderful properties for undies: it’s soft, smooth and comfortable. In fact, it feels just like cotton. But it’s much better for the world.

The wonderful sound that comes from Australian duo Angus & Julia Stone just keeps getting better. Their latest album, Down The Way, due for release in March, is again full of stunningly beautiful melodies. The style continues from their previous album, A Book Like This, with the tracks swapping between Julia’s enchanting vocals and Angus’s rougher, more melancholic style. Listen to their first single from the album, And The Boys, below and tell me if this isn’t a band set for stardom?

Bumblebee’s street art has long been lovingly intervening on Los Angeles’ skyline through phone boxes and newsstands. Most recently, Bumblebee has taken an affectionate turn, and draws LA’s attention to a tragic rise in child homelessness rates since the recent global financial crisis with a series of subtle and moving murals where child homelessness is most prevalent. How can you not love a band called ¡Apeshit!? Their name says it all. I got to catch these guys tour at a warehouse in Bed-Stuy the other night as they were capping off their most recent tour, and even though there were only 20 or so people in the audience by the time they went on, their set was absolutely epic, culminating in frontman Pat Berran being hoisted up and subsequently dropped by the drunken, sweaty, and heavily tattooed crowd. If you love fast, spastic, intensely brutal punk, this band will make you crap your pants.
