Ever since last Christmas I wanted to record a Christmas tune, and of course, do it my way. I even started one up but didn’t finish. But this year I was determined to do so. So I started recording Winter Wonderland a couple of weeks ago in my downtown New York apartment studio. What came out is what I’ve nicknamed Walkin’ In An Indie Wonderland. So consider this indie alternative to the standard a gift to fans, friends and music lovers.

U2 recorded a song called New York on their All That You Can’t Leave Behind LP, and another one after 9/11. I recorded my own tribute, We Rock for NY, in 2008. The city built on industry, money, power, wealth inequality, artistry, can be seen as a microcosm of the world. New York today is a completely different city than 40 years ago, with a new mix of people. Read more

Sometimes art says something, and we don’t know quite what the heck it is, but the pure thought it immediately plants in our mind is immeasurable. That’s what I would say about Tightspot by David Bryne. While I was hanging with a friend in the gallery district of New York we walked by this humongous balloon globe beneath the High Line and were blown away. And yes it is THAT David Byrne from Talking Heads. Read more

I’ve always believed that pop music can be more. You can call it the gospel of rock and pop. That’s the initial concept behind my latest EP, Glasnost, but it was furthered by what I saw happening in the world: revolutions in the middle east, the election of the first black president of America. Marcella Silva makes universe scale art installations almost on the visual scale of Anish Kapoor or Richard Sera. Her objects are almost surreal in form and often spotlight a highly emotive image of the color spectrum. She is someone with an original idea and isn’t afraid to think big. Read more

One word for La Jovenc. Genius. I came across him some time around 2007 and he blew my mind with his musical experiments. One in particular where he used all sampled insect sounds to create fantastic soundscapes. He greatly influenced my first recordings. I did a song called My Favorite People, where I directly used him as a muse. Whenever you hear those qurky synths in my songs, think La Jovenc.

Erika Larsen’s cattle ranch photographs have a surreal yet timeless quality to them. I would never have guessed that they were commissioned by a business magazine. We caught up with the New York-based photographer recently to find out about her time on the ranch. Read more

Artist Oliver Voss installed this sculpture of a giant, bathing woman in Hamburg’s Binnenalster, an artificial lake in the middle of the city. Some residents are baffled by it, but luckily for them, the installation isn’t permanent.

Yes, Cuteoverload has been doing it for years, but can there really be too many sites devoted to cute animals? Fuck Yeah Puppies may not be original, but they have puppies. Lots and lots of puppies.

Things continue to improve for New York’s metal scene, if Batillus are any indication. The sludge/doom trio from Brooklyn offer crushingly heavy, down-tuned and down-tempo instrumental riffage that sounds like what a mutant that has crawled out of Newtown Creek might have on his iPod. The band recently added vocalist Fade Kainer of Inswarm (Jarboe’s touring band) to its line-up.

With his heavy, all-protein diet, Leatherface probably needs to exercise a little, so this Nike sneaker made from human skin leather should suit him nicely. Actually, this piece is a grotesque and almost too realistic shoe made from latex as a comment on the horror of sweatshop labor
