Japan is one of the most developed countries to show presence in the blogsphere. In terms of blog posts by language, the Japanese generate 37% of all posts (where English takes only 36% of them all). Japan is far behind though when it comes to social networks. In the IPsos report Japan seems to maintain a relatively low frequency of visitation to social networking websites (only 9% visited a SN in the last 30 days, 13% in more than 30 days). goo Research (via whatjapanthinks) published a survey which provides more evidence: about 63% of the survey respondents using social networking sites never added another person to a social network! Mixi (the largest social network in Japan, attracting 11.1 million people) is a social network with an ‘invitation only’ participation. Read more

After weeks of packing Australia’s crate with the best of Aussie nightlife, our crate was farewelled in lavish style at the Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange send-off party in Sydney last week. We discovered Australia is swapping with Brazil, so we’re hanging out for the samba and cachaça to sway ashore and lead us astray. The young architect Junya Ishigami is pushing the boundaries of the weightless aesthetic stream of architecture. Here, for the Kanagawa Institute of Technology, he has designed a glass and steel pavilion with a roof that floats on a sparse forest of thin steel columns or ‘flats’. Read more

Complementing The Big Picture is The Big Caption, a parody site ‘wherein jokes and statements are made using typography’. Anyone who thinks black metal is too rigid and narrow a genre to have room for innovation would do well to check out Lifelover, a Swedish band that defies every convention of black metal while still remaining miraculously kvlt. The sextet wafts between languid, hallucinatory grooves that channel Iggy Pop and latter-day Cure to unhinged freak-outs that sound as if they’re emanating from the deepest, coldest forests of Norway.

Set up in 2011, Rebel Unlit is a printing collaboration between London based Artists Neil Butler and Shanney Mulcahy. They make short run screen-printed t-shirts and limited edition prints from their studio in East London. All the t shirts are fair traded and printed by hand and, as a result, each one is unique.
