If daily we all could see the world through the lenses of Terje Sørgjerd, we would be ardent environmentalist. At first glance, the images seem unbelievable, offering us a window into a night sky meant for dreams. When combined with an uplifting solo piano piece, The Mountain becomes a moving meditation on the finite nature of humanity.

By manipulating the pages with careful repositioning, she is even able to spell out words. Let’s not be too loud though, because it just might say, “shush!” Read more

I am fascinated with creating ambivalence in achromatic pieces by using only straight lines yet forming a work that possesses an ocular complexity. I also like my drawings to be redefined by simply changing their position, like The Shark. In both my drawings and photography, there is a deep affinity for removing the costume of color. Read more

The paintings of Betzi Pipis capture the female face like no other. She achieves a remarkable depth of color that she either provokes with drippings or sedates with watercolor. From the tortured to the paroxysmal, Betzi’s technique delivers the rawest sense of emotion. Read more

For Lovers Only is a new film starring Stana Katic and writer Mark Polish, and directed by twin brother Michael Polish. In the vein of French New Wave, dialogue becomes inferior to the visual. The film has received much online praise and successfully pulls the viewer into the intimacy.

Gina Becker’s Quotes of the Week is a weekly blog that is nothing short of hilarious. With voyeuristic glee, she stalks the conversations around her seeking the most witty, but mostly awkward utterances of her fellow mankind. So, empty your bladders and get ready for an Anderson Cooper-esque giggle fit.

Having ridden the New York subway system for five years, it seems the only real perils these days are rats, panhandlers, and being taken out by an errant cross kick from an energetic breakdancer. These photos from the How To Be A Retronaut blog are a wonderful reminder of a more colourful and edgy New York that is (perhaps sadly?) long since passed. Read more

I’m so excited to have stumbled across the work of Berkeley, California artist Weston Teruya. On first glance, his work feels purely abstract, like black and white grids with dots of colour here and there, undulating across clean backgrounds. On closer inspection, however, perfectly rendered chairs, life savers, netting, plants and various ephemera come to light. I’m always excited when I come across an artist who can so successfully merge the realistic and abstract, and Teruya does it with aplomb. Read more

Oh man! Now I’ve seen it all. An entire blog dedicated to cupcakes, those perfect little bundles of sweet, sweet goodness. Hell, my mouth is watering just looking at them. What will they think of next? A blog about pretzels? Ha! Oh, wait a minute. Damn!

Yat-Kha are a stunning Tuvan band that combines throatsinging and traditional folk music with straight-up rock. Their album ReCovers is an awesome collection of covers of songs by Led Zeppelin, Joy Division, and Motörhead among many others, reflecting their general approach to music on the rest of their impressive catalog. Despite the modern elements, the Moscow-based group still conjures the vast steppes and endless skies of the small Russian republic in southern Siberia.

My commitment issues have always prevented me from getting a tattoo, and temporary tattoos always seemed kind of lame. That is until I discovered Tattly: a temporary tattoo company full of quirky hand drawn-esque images begging to be mine.
