Here’s a recent illustration I made based on the tale of Pygmalion and Galatea. As the tale goes, Pygmalion falls deeply in love with the sculpture he created, wishing that he could find a wife as beautiful as she. The goddess Venus then grants him this wish by bringing the sculpture to life. The first time I became familiar with this tale was when I saw a painting inspired by it at the Metropolitan Museum of Art years ago. Ever since, it has been my favorite painting in the museum. Many artists have tackled this particular story over the years, but Jean-Léon Gérôme’s is by far my favorite.
I’m a big fan of clothing line, The Brooklyn Circus. They seamlessly blend a mix of retro American classic with contemporary urban street wear, making them a unique force in the fashion world. Their creative director and co-founder, Ouigi Theodore, aka The Bearded Man, has recently teamed up with PF Flyers for a the Archival Reissue Collection campaign. My favorite quote from the spot is: ‘If I wasn’t different, I felt odd’.
Brian Bonz is a Brooklyn-based musician and a good friend. His latest release, The Triborough Odyssey, is a tribute to the city he’s from and a recollection of experiences past and present. Produced by John McEntire (Broken Social Scene), the album is a solid piece of music and storytelling. Check out the video for their song, Honey Bee.
Illo Confidential is an illustration collective featuring a group of incredibly talented illustrators. I am very honored to be a part of such an amazing group. We post our most up-to-date projects and processes on our site.
This is an awesome video of Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) and Chris Gibbs, owner of Union LA, on the streets of France talking about culture, fashion and America. There’s such a wonderful vibe to this piece, it makes me want to walk the streets of a European city in the springtime.
I consider myself a very lucky person to get to draw pictures for a living. I find inspiration in many things, including the culture that I live in, the art I look at, the food I eat, the people I interact with, and the music I listen to.
Edel Rodriguez is one of my favorite working illustrators. With such a strong body of work and a variety of approaches to the craft, his art is always exciting and original. Check this blog post he made about his recent trip to Bali. His sketch book entries are beautiful and so full of life. They tell the story better than the photographs.
