They are enchanting snapshots of everyday life that are yet able to provoke the imagination as you are drawn into their story.

A lo-fi production, the songwriting and arranging is what catches my ear. A beginner guitarist could learn these songs fairly easily, but there is depth to these compositions pointing to Castle’s maturity as a writer. Listen to [track 13] In Suburbia, based on an X-Files episode.

Am I writing about a musician writing about talking to musicians? Yes, but Weatherman is a far more interesting and less convoluted project than that statement might convey. Annie Higgins sits down with musicians who love and excel at their craft (but may be difficult to slot into a neat box) and devotes time and thought to discussing their work and lives in a deeply satisfying way. A talented and complicated musician herself, Higgins seems to understand that what’s in a musician’s head can be just as fascinating as what we hear from out in the audience.

One night last year, I happened to catch some of Shannon Favia’s artwork on display at Chicago restaurant/venue, Uncommon Ground, just down the street from Wrigley Field. It really caught my eye, so I made sure to find her work online when I got home that evening. Using materials that include spray paint, cutout strips of denim, buttons, guitar picks and a wide variety of specialty papers, she creates pieces that immediately draw you in. Birds seem to be a favorite subject and her work often features them pasted on or stenciled text that make interesting comments on various aspects of the human condition. Or would that be the bird condition?
