Very much neglected in the shadow of its siblings — the famous giant in the Bronx and the high profile zoo in Central Park — Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Zoo deserves much more credit than it gets. Sure, it’s small. But that just means you can see everything in a spare hour while taking a stroll in the park. And it only costs $6. I also really like that the snack bar and gift shop consist of a handful of vending machines ready to sell you a weird microwave pizza or a stuffed Meerkat. Read more

Let me preface this by saying that in some circles (such as my parents’ backyard) I am known as Dr BeamO. But rest assured, I am not sponsored in any official way. The BeamO is basically a 30-inch diameter hula-hoop, wrapped in colorful spandex, and with a hole cut out of the center. It is enjoyed in much the same manner as a traditional hard Frisbee. It is best thrown two handed, and best caught by getting a head, arm, or leg inside the center hole.  Read more

 

I just saw this installation called The Transfinite at the Park Ave Armory in New York. It’s like being put into an ocean of precise, meticulously planned data. Incredibly high-powered projectors shoot Ikeda’s visuals onto a 54 x 81 foot floor and a 54 x 40 foot wall, as speakers blast a perfectly synchonized musical piece. Read more

With Lungfish guitarist Asa Osborne’s latest project, Zomes, he continues to explore loops and cycles with endlessly repeating musical phrases, this time played on circuit-bent keyboards. The resulting tracks sound at times like medieval court music at others like the soundtrack to a Hal Hartley movie.
