This video depicts the work of choreographer Marie Chouinard, whom I’ve only recently become familiar with when some friends showed me a clip of this video in a party setting. Upon further examination, I found the work to be very intriguing and much deeper than anyone at the party probably realized. I was immediately taken by the video because it reminded me of another artist I love, Matthew Barney. Provocative works like this also remind me how many different ways there are to interpret any given performance or piece, and how misunderstood art can be by people who only take things at face value.

I’ve always wanted to be hooked up to a set of EEG’s and see what comes out of my brain. This is kind of similar but going the other direction. Shock the body/shock the body baby. I wonder what else could be controlled like this? Maybe a fully controllable human?!?

I didn’t discover this video until recently, but I really enjoy it. This was always my favorite Front 242 song, but I had interpreted the lyrics much differently than director Anton Corbijn. Actually, I think he probably chose to interpret the lyrics more literally for the sake of the imagery – which is apparently a great approach to come up with a treatment for a music video.
