I often return to Alison Scarpulla’s online portfolio to revel in the world she has created with her whimsical obscure images. I love her use of desaturated colour, rich grainy texture, and the unsettling complex feel of her work.

Leaving This Life is a new series I have created and will be exhibiting later in the year. It is a voyeuristic and sensual portrait series exploring the fragility of life in relation to murder, violence and dying before our time. The images reflect the moment where youth, beauty and raw sexuality transition into death. I explore the futile fight against the elements, the spirited struggle to maintain a foot in this realm and the calm surrender of returning to the earth.

I discovered Kyle Thompson’s self portrait photography a few weeks ago when I stumbled across an surreal and confronting image of a bare chested man with a rope tied around his neck with his head on fire. When you see a striking image like this it is very hard to simply keep scrolling.

I instantly needed to know more about this photographer and was quietly blown away by each and every one of his images. Thompson’s photography has a palpable sense of melancholia, which he evokes with images of himself burning, drowning, and hanging. Although there is a common feel and theme running through his work each image is distinct which makes Thompson’s work feel beautifully fresh and unique.

Simone Felice is from upstate New York. He is an author, poet, songwriter and a survivor of two very near death experiences. He often sings about drugs, prostitutes, guns, whiskey and war, all delivered with his expressive and soulfoul voice. I love his intensity and the rhythm in his songwriting. This is a great video of a beautiful track from him called Scarecrow.
