Ricky Powell is commonly known as the Fourth Beastie Boy and Def Jam’s unofficial chronicler. A New York native photographer, it seems logical that he has teamed up with PONY for a limited edition range of dunks that dropped in Berlin last week. I’m no die hard sneaker freak, but these are extremely fresh.

Sound system culture in the UK is what Hip Hop Block Parties were to the US. In the eighties, these sounds took on American and Jamaican influences and gave them an English twist with explosive results. Although too young to go to the soundclashes at the time, Live at the Soul Dayer was a live album which was a MASSIVE influence on me while growing up. It’s an amazing piece of history pressed onto vinyl: a live recording of England’s finest soul and Hip Hop sound systems, including Main Attraction, TNT and Beatfreak. Read more

Dubstep is conquiring the world at a crazy rate at the moment, so it’s real important to know of its roots. Bassweight is a wicked feature length documentary charting its growth from its origins in London town. Beautifully shot, it features interviews with the pioneers and major players of the game.

Whenever I’m feeling lost, or in the studio hitting a brick wall, I put this tune on and it pushes me forward. It’s about twenty years old but still sounds so fresh. Shut up and Dance was an amazing record label, indeed.

I grew up with London underground trains rumbling past the back of our house constantly, which is why I am totally obsessed with the London underground system and love it to bits. These do nothing to quell my obsession: prints featuring geographical representations of
the different tube lines. Read more

Redlight, aka Clipz, comes strong with his new mix. And it’s pure bass music: like listening to a pirate radio show in the nineties, but brought bang up to date with bits of rave, soul, hip hop, jungle and lots more, all wrapped up into this spicy meatball.

The UK has been developing some serious talent in the hip hop/dubstep/grime game for a long while now and it’s always a beautiful thing to see kids who were running the mix CD and club circuit game now getting signed to majors. Production values are getting slicker and tunes are gaining crossover appeal, but still appealing to the original heads. Sincere is the next one to blow. This tune seriously drops hard.

Many years ago I used to DJ with a guy who wore a Double Goose at gigs. He nearly caught on fire twice from errant cigarette butts, came close to starting fights because he kept on nudging into people cos it was so big, spilt drinks everywhere, and at the end of the night, he had lost about three stone because he was sweating so much from wearing it in a hot club. Saying all that, they do look the business.

I am absolutly in love with this new company who are putting a lot of streetwear brands to shame with their amazing attention to detail and unique aesthetic. With Y’oh, strong African prints sit next to wax cotton and military twill lining. The first range dropped recently and I am excited to see how this label will grow from season to season.

Anyone who knows me knows I am partial to a nice sip of vodka. But in the day time, it’s a different matter, well before midday anyway. Then it’s all about the mighty cuppa. And We Are Tea share the same passion. Operating from opposite St. Pauls cathedral, not only do they have a cool tea shop, but they make their own award-winning blends. Trust me, these guys are turning the art of tea into alchemy.

I love screenprints, but I also like working on limited runs of artwork. Intergalactic Fly are poster prints of an original painting that I did on used metal plates, printed, then reworked over with acrylic spray paint. Although the design stays the same, each one is different, making them unique. Limited to 50, signed and numbered. They are so fresh out of the studio you can still smell the paint. Read more

One of the most dynamic new acts to burst into our eardrums in years, Brooklyn’s Vivian Girls have just released their debut self-titled album, which combines Phil Spector-ish Wall Of Sound harmonies with fuzzy melodies, as reflected on this track, Where Do You Run To. We have it available for free download in the Music Download section of Lost At E Minor. Hooray! [psst, it's in the third column of the site]

Luxury goods have been getting a bad rap lately, and for good reason. Now I don’t know how you roll, but we don’t know many people who enjoy covering themselves head-to-toe in someone else’s initials. Yet for some reason designers think that diamante logos and monogrammed tapestries are the best mediums to communicate their brand. So it’s just as well LA based eyewear label Barton Perreira doesn’t play by the rules. Starting out less than a year ago, you won’t find their designs getting over-excited by insignia. Instead, these guys hand make their frames in Japan to rely on precision, fit and design. And that’s the way it should be.
We have a Contribute Section through which you can post onto LAEM under your name about your favourite pop culture discoveries. So help spread the good word about those talented peeps doing talented things. They win. You win. We win!
