Okay, full disclosure, Miss Cassie is my wife and no longer technically a Miss, I suppose. Her artwork is dense and complicated, full of pathos, and never fails to inspire me. Throughout our 17 year relationship, I have watched her work evolve, grow, and change into what it has become today. I am particularly intrigued by her more recent work, which mixes a fascination with Japan, printing techniques, recent motherhood and frozen charlottes. I am looking forward to an exhibition in the spring at newly re-located Slingluff Gallery in Calicoon, NY.

The enigma of the artist known as Scott Walker has long been a fascination of mine. The lush orchestral sounds of his early work always hits a sweet spot when the cold months of December and snow descend upon the wilds of Pennsylvania.

Equally enthralling and fascinating is his later and much more difficult solo work, which he has released at a glacial pace since the early 80s. Dark, unsettling, enigmatic and cold, they are the gold standard for difficult listening. These later works took me years to penetrate or at least somewhat wrap my head around. This unsettling video of the first single from his upcoming LP, titled Bish Bosch, seems to indicate Walker hasn’t lost his touch.

The Fender Marauder combines two things I love: weird inexpensive guitars and Fender Guitars. It is based off a lost 1960’s prototype for a type of Fender that never made it past a few very rare proto-types which snuck out of the factory. It looks like they brought it back as an entry level Fender with some very cool features, including a triple humbucker. This is the kind of stuff I go crazy for and I want one of the Lake Placid blue models in the worst way possible.

They remind me of growing up in the ‘90s and having a secret band you found out about through some photocopied zine or a video clip at the end of a 120 Minutes on an early Sunday morning. I guess the ’90s connection makes sense since Jim Greer used to play bass in Guided By Voices and this is his new gig. Buy the cassette of this album from the fine folks at Burger Records, who deserve a name check all of their own for making tons of very cool cassettes of all kinds of awesomeness available.

They are a high-energy group and I had the pleasure of releasing their debut 7” EP, Yeah, What?, last year on my label Summersteps Records and almost snagged a spot on the soundtrack for the last Twilight movie. This is their follow up, a two song EP that celebrates Christmas in a less obvious way than most holiday music. Download it at the Summersteps Records bandcamp site or iTunes.

‘Atmospheric’ is how the man himself described them to me during an interview back before a gig in Hoboken, NJ, over a decade ago. They are like old friends: spare and acoustic, but always revealing something new with each listen. They distill the best of Barrett, Lennon and Dylan through Hitchcock’s own surreal worldview.
