Magma’s Otis. I’d love to tell you more about it, but I think it might be smarter just to let singer Christian Vander explain it to you — in Kobaïan, the language he created specifically for Magma. Press play and enjoy.

There aren’t many performances in TV history more memorable than Idris Elba’s turn as Baltimore drug czar Stringer Bell on The Wire. So I was thrilled to discover Luther, the BBC show that flips Elba from robber to cop, on Netflix Instant. Set in London, Luther finds the British actor back in his hometown playing an embattled detective responsible for the city’s grisliest murder cases. The show is shot with such care, it’s beautiful to watch. Imagine our beloved Law & Order directed by Christopher Nolan.

Pusha T is far and away my favorite rapper out there right now. You probably know him from the records he made with his duo, Clipse. Since then, he’s been brought into the GOOD Music fold by Kanye and I’m psyched to be seeing him get even more exposure than ever. His Fear of God mixtape has been getting me through the summer. Can’t wait for Fear of God 2. Read more

Some gents I know are finishing up a documentary on one of my personal inspirations, writer/editor, George Plimpton. The godfather of participatory journalism, he pitched against Willie Mays, tended goal for the Bruins, and ran the floor with Bill Russell and the Celtics, all while editing the Paris Review and maintaining his status as NYC’s Fireworks commissioner. The site I run, Take the Handle, is actually throwing a party in August for it. Should be a hoot.

Many of Michael Lierly’s canvases seem to communicate, through a brash oil technique and vibrant colors and figures, a kind of primal confusion of mood. I’ve been wanting one of his gigantic, enfuriated babies on my wall for over a year now.

When you first hear William Elliot Whitmore’s voice, it’s hard to believe he isn’t a grizzled old man. The baritone-voiced one-man-band does rousing bar room ballads on the banjo and guitar that are sure to send shivers down your spine. On closer listen, Whitmore’s voice does seem slightly affected. But like Tom Waits before him, his voice is likely to age like a good scotch.

Listen to the William Wlliot Whitemore track, Dry.
