Originally opened in 1972 and called The Cantina, what is now Pappy & Harriet’s was once an outlaw biker burrito bar. Set right at the entrance to Pioneertown (a proper 1940’s – 50’s old west movie set created by the likes of Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers), Pappy’s is now a swingin’ bar known for its mesquite BBQ and live music. On any given night you can catch national acts like Rufus Wainwright, local faves Gram Rabbit, or you may even find Robert Plant sitting in with the Thrift Store All Stars.

Inspirational reclaimed material artist, sadly now deceased, Noah Purifoy was a founding director of the Watts Tower Art Center in Los Angeles. He was an early pioneer for social change via the arts.

His found object work has been shown throughout the world, but the most stunning display is the Noah Purifoy Desert Art Museum of Assemblage Sculpture. A ten acre village of Purifoy’s structures and sculptures constructed entirely from junked materials. It’s all there, weathering the elements and deconstructing along with the desert scape. It’s otherworldly and amazing.

I met Jonathan Windham while in Austin working on a benefit art exhibition. He contributed an incredible scratchboard piece to the show that came with an artist statement that, on a particularly difficult day, made us all cry. Usually Jon does not make me cry.

His Eyes Project is stunning. ‘The eyes are the window to the soul’, they say, and these portraits teleport you right there. If it’s not enough just to stare into the depths of a scratched elephant eye, maybe the fact that half the proceeds from the sale of the pieces go to non-profit animal rights/protection groups will incite you to go here and select one to call your own.

If I had to sum up Nina Savill’s work in a phrase, it would be ‘go big or go home’. These jewels don’t whisper, they shout. You can feel the hammer strike in every piece. It’s the stuff of a fiercely fashionable super hero. Savill works in fine silver and 14K gold, and each piece is individually hand-crafted in her studio in Los Angeles. Her Artifacts collection utilizes organic and reclaimed materials to create a one-of-a-kind work of wearable art.

Montgomery, Texas-based artist, Paul Meyer contributed a painting for the recent ART from the Ashes Lost Pines Recovery benefit exhibition in Austin. The work, Mutable Maintenance, became one of the focal pieces of the show. His work is at once textural, sculptural and gloriously subtle. Look once at a piece and it may appear to be a landscape of texture and shape; look closer, and characters and stories emerge.
