Bringing statistics to life is not particularly easy, but this website does so with a creative brilliance. Using interactive animation and videos, you can look at a wide ranging set of sustainable global development data as the numbers change across space and and time. It promotes a statistically-founded world view, and somehow makes that fun.

Why we like the things we like, specifically why we like the music we like, can be a touchy subject, especially for those of us whose identities are so seemingly bound up in these often inexplicable tastes. Honest, unsparing reflection on taste can lead to us to question aspects of ourselves we took to be as fundamentally defining. Read more

The one thing that gets me going just as much as listening to or playing music is the visual identity of it all – most specifically, album cover artwork. I am a sucker for a great record cover, and over the years, I have bought albums based solely on the artwork. Read more

A few years ago I watched the documentary, Scott Walker: 30 Century Man. The film is fascinating and Walker himself is a surprisingly open and gracious interviewee. But for me, the real gem in the movie was first hearing The Electrician. This song’s combination of brooding Berlin-era Bowie ambience and Walker’s bombastic crooner schmaltz just shouldn’t work. But it does. There is nothing else quite like this song.

This is our new EP, released on October 3 on 100m/Sweaters and Pearls records. These six songs represent a couple years’ worth of work (fun work, but work, nonetheless) and we’re really proud to have completed it. I think it provides a great snapshot of our evolution as a band from our first single.

Animal Hospital’s Kevin Micka plays and records everything himself. This is impressive enough, but live, he recreates these songs piece-by-piece, building each song from its constituent parts by playing, looping, manipulating, layering and mixing guitar and drums. Read more

Adrian Tomine is one of the finest cartoonists and illustrators of this generation, alongside the iconic Chris Ware and Daniel Clowes. He began his career Xeroxing copies of his comics for distribution, and stubbornly chooses to work in a medium as deliberately obscure as independent comics. While he continues to develop his ongoing series Optic Nerve (currently entering its fifteenth year of publication), he’s also the illustrator of choice for the New Yorker.

I tossed and turned through three chapters of an epic Russian novel last night. Or so it felt as a constant stream of characters made their way past the stringent casting couch and into the deepest reaches of my dreams. Read more

Setting Sun’s cover of Tom Petty’s You Got Lucky was recently released as part of Buffet Libre DJ’s compilation CD, Rewind 2. Says frontman, Gary Levitt, of their version on the song: ‘We got back from our European tour on Christmas Eve with a December 27th deadline for the track looming. It was finally started on December 26th and then sent off completed the next day. It was a great exercise in having to let some things go. That’s twenty-four hours out the door complete, old school style. That’s how records used to be made. Motown, baby, MOTOWN!’ We have the song for free download in our Music Download section [psst, it's in the third column of the site]
