A long disbanded team of super-human heroes must overcome the mission gone awry that forced them into retirement to resume defending the earth against other super-human threats, but some missing members must be replaced, and quickly, because a powerful Soviet menace is stirring! Shades of Watchmen in this series created and drawn by comics veteran Kurt Belcher.

Held bi-weekly at comic creator Warren Ellis’ Whitechapel message boards, the “Remake / Remodel” threads are genre bending exercises in re-imagining old comic and pulp concepts. Artists of every skill level and discipline create their interpretations of the chosen topic and display the finished product within the thread. Results vary but there are always outstanding and thought provoking ideas presented. Captain Future And His Amazing Lab Goons is the current theme.

A veteran of the animation studio scene, artist Thomas Perkins churns out an impressive and always engaging blend of Lovecraftian creatures, heroes crackling with arcs of pure energy and straight up pen and ink pieces that are wholly unique in their vision. I caught Austin band Watch Out For Rockets playing the other week at the Beauty Bar, a small smoky den on a bustling hipster strip. Although they hit the stage a few hours late, they still cranked out an awesome set of guitar-based power pop, though they left out my favorite track, Urgent Serpent Merchant (below).
