Claire Martin got her start as a social worker and turned her efforts towards her camera. And it shows. Her nitty gritty subjects and intensely intimate reportage of squatters and junkies won her the Magnum Foundation 2010 Inge Morath award. Her work meshes between fine art, documentary and contemporary photography. Read more

What’s there not to be said about this Scottish street trails rider. 15 million hits on YouTube can’t be wrong. He’s an absolute beast and has mega skills on a bike. This video is a journey from Edinburgh to the Isle Of Skye and was filmed by his room mate Dave Sowerby. Make your granny watch it.

Jape are a electro-rock band from Dublin, Ireland featuring members of Redneck Manifesto, Somadrone and VisionAir. Their music makes me want to do the highland jig and their videos are top notch. I got to know these guys after using a Redneck Manifesto song in an Etnies Video. One of their songs, Phil Lynott, was almost nearly voted as Ireland’s Christmas single 2008.

English film-maker Philip Bloom really nails it here, with this short documentary on Texas old time BMX legend and gun fanatic, Jeff Pierce. He’s part redneck, part hippie and part nutcase! I hate guns, but really enjoy nerding out on the camera work here. Shot with a Red Epic and Phantom Flex, the slow-mo on this film is absolutely tremendous. If you are wondering where all the empty bullet shells go, Pierce recycles them into bicycle valve caps.

They shop and you shoot.

When I think of felt, I think of the wee furry animals we played with in junior school. But now we’re all grown up, we can still enjoy felt, thanks to this Boston-based eco felt company. They makes choice custom home décor for your office or lounge that’s both sustainable and biodegradable. My cats approve and so do I when my visitors need floor space to crash at SXSW.

Okay, this might be a bit of a wildcard and too much of an in-joke for you non-Scottish speaking viewers with no access to subtitles. But it’s pure genius if you ask me. The weather is so bad in Scotland that it brings out the best in us. As well amazing You Tube dubbers. Like they said in Saturday Night Live one time: ‘if It’s Not Scottish, It’s crap!’

One-woman noise act Child Bride makes droning, ambient, sample-laden, tribal noise that sounds like a pagan cyber-witch mourning the death of her shaman.
