One Dot Zero is a great website showcasing contemporary visual arts projects based in London. I found it when researching alternative forms for my course in Film and Theatre. But it’s also a good outlet for filmmakers, amateur animators, or artists to get involved in.

Tweak Bird are a two-piece garage rock band with a really nice groove and some great harmonies. Lights In Lines will be stuck in your head for a very long time. It seems to have an almost ‘stoner-rock’ feel but isn’t solely reachable for listeners who are high.

Red Snapper are a great electronica band with some really rich melodies. Often drawing direct influences from jazz, integrating the double bass and saxophone. I’ve loved this band for a long time and recently found my old copy of Making Bones from 1999 and I can’t suggest it enough to any fans of fusion music.

Duo Miika Eloranta and Janne Mansnerus from Finland had only been releasing singles until late 2010 when they released their album Empire, their philosophy being that the experience of their music is lost in studio recordings. On first listen, Empire is a fairly straightforward trance album. I stumbled upon it in a CD store, and without really knowing what it was, I took a chance. It’s very considered and oddly passionate music.

Gruff Rhys of the Super Furry Animals’ solo career. I simply couldn’t get enough of his latest album, Hotel Shampoo, when it came out. Shark Ridden waters was without a doubt my song for the summer, and after recently revisiting it, I remember why.

It is much more accessible than any of the Super Furry Animals’ albums and stays hidden in the back of your mind until those moments where you’re alone and find yourself humming along. His absolute fascination with mastering all instruments is evident in the production of Hotel Shampoo, as it is just a giant concoction of sounds which works so well.

Binary is a small four piece band from London who I managed to catch at a small gig not long ago. A great way to show that dark, post-punk is definitely not dead. With echoes of Joy Division and Echo and the Bunnymen, their spacey brand of music feels so familiar but fresh.

Two great artists coming together to make some great, dark, ambient electronica with garage-feel drum loops. As we know, the elusive Burial has been gathering more commercial acclaim after being nominated for a Mercury Prize in 2008. His style of tinny garage drums coupled with ghostly samples is a perfect fit alongside Four Tet’s often complex IDM or ambient straight electronica. The two have been combining a lot recently, producing great records, and even producing an EP with Thom Yorke of Radiohead which is also worth a listen.

Snailhouse often don’t grab the listeners attention at first visit until their rather lounge/easy listening songs suddenly descend into synth guitar wails. The solo project of Mike Feuerstack of Wooden Stars definitely has some punch. His latest album, Sentimental Gentleman, is drowned in manageable complexities, made clear through the fantastic production from Jeremy Gara, drummer of The Arcade Fire.

Bogdan Raczynski is an old name to many in the realms of “intelligent dance music” after his first release in ’99 under the wing of Aphex Twin’s Richard D James’ Reflex Records. Since his first release, he has rarely changed his form: creating heavy laden beats flooded with strained and strange vocals, often reminiscent of early Aphex Twin or Squarepusher.

As a performer, his live shows tend to be highly melodramatic ,after once performing in a Power Rangers costume. Bogdan continues to push the boundaries of IDM. Who Is It?, featuring Bjork, is a particular highlight for me and shows Bogdan’s playful side in the video above.

I found out about this guy through his collaborations with Flying Lotus, a name familiar to any electronica fan and more-so through his work with Radiohead’s Thom Yorke. Gonjasufi offers big breakbeats, with flashes of psychedelic made and found instruments.

The gravelly, wavering vocal style isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, but his latest release, A Sufi a Killer, on Warp Records, is definitely worth a listen. The track Ancestors (produced by Flying Lotus) is a good place to start into Gonjasufi’s spiraling maze of delta blues influenced, lo-fi hip-hop.

Volcano Choir is a collaboration between Justin Vernon of Bon Iver fame, Collections of Colonies of Bees, and Pele, and showcasing hypnotic driving rhythms coupled with Vernon’s soaring voice over the dainty post-rock indie twiddlings of the other bands.

Lars Von Trier has been in the news a lot recently after his ‘Nazi faux pas’ at Cannes. This is one of his short films from 2007, showing Von Trier doing what he does best. Taken from a collection of 33 short films, To Each His Own Cinema, we are yet again shot into Von Trier’s sadistic mind, but we couldn’t love it more.
