And who can blame them? With their larger than life enthusiasm and twist and twitch dance moves, Dappled gives us all a fair bit to crush on. The great news is that Jape channelled their band crush into a remix. Hallelujah! Dappled Cities recent track Born At The Right Time has been given the electronica once over by these glorious Irish boys and the result is magical. Luckily, the two versions of the song are so different that we don’t feel we have to go into battle over which we like better. But you’re more than welcome to.

Life In A Day is like the film equivalent of listening to M83 or googling absurdism. Hugely overwhelming and grossly enlightening, leaving you feeling utterly confused about your infinite potential/extreme insignificance. It’s a visual roller coaster. The concept was simple: a montage of footage from across the world shot on one day. But the outcome was magnificent.

It manages to showcase the incredible breadth of differences and commonalities across the world’s ethnosphere, making you feel an equal sense of distance and connectedness. It was not shot on a significant day, yet like everyday, significant things happened. From a Berlin music festival riot that caused 21 fatalities, to marriage proposals, heartbreaks and deaths; the unusual and usual occurrences of July 24th, 2010 have been time capsuled for eternity in this extraordinary film. When you look at the sort of videos that make it viral on YouTube (dare I name that Korean Pop song that’s raked in over 600 million views), it’s a bit of a travesty that Life In A Day didn’t receive a little more attention.

Dutch mother, American father. Netherlands birthplace, USA upbringing. Ehrin Macksey is another individual proving that globalisation creates incredible beings with an artful eye for human observation and supreme creativity. Beyond his parents and their geography, Ehrin says his eyes were opened by an accidental trip to the Middle East during the First Gulf War as a teenager. An excursion we presume very few people can boast.

The outcome of his open eyes has been something else, more powerful than your average photos, more meaningful than your average words. Having now spent time based in South East Asia, Ehrin clearly feels a strong connection to the region, evidenced in every shot he takes. But Ehrin doesn’t just run around picking perfect angles and scouting perfect lighting. His photo collections are usually accompanied by a detailed story explaining the subject’s past present and future. It’s not a guessing game where assumptions are made about a person’s psychological wellbeing based purely on their physical surroundings; he clearly gets to know the person on the other side of the lens.

La Fiesta de Santa Marta de Ribarteme, or the Festival of Near Death Experiences, makes an absolute mockery of La Tomatina and Running with the Bulls on the scale of crazy experiences and culture. Just like the name suggests, the event recognises individuals that came freakishly close to kicking the bucket during the year that’s gone by.

In most parts of the world, people would just say a quick prayer of thanks and sink a couple of tallies. But that’s not exactly the Spanish style. Rather, the aforementioned near deathers jump into (actual) caskets and get carried to a local hill by friends and family. Here, they take a moment to reflect upon the fate they so skillfully missed. With all caskets up on the hill and moments for pondering life complete, normal behavior kicks back in and everyone gets boozed and watches fireworks. A very strange spectacle, indeed.

SeatID is an Israeli company set to make your flying experience more tolerable. Gone are the days of being stuck on a flight next to those irksome plebeians who fall asleep on your shoulder, chat incessantly on topics better suited to Doctor Phil, and try in vain to calm their bloodcurdling babies. According to SeatID, flyers are social savvy individuals; of the 5.2 billion passengers that fly every year, 1 billion have Facebook, 500 million are Tweeters and 190 million are on LinkedIn.

Flyers will soon be given the option to opt in for social seating allowing airlines to allocate their pose on the plane based on social compatibilities and the demographic of friends in their social media universe. Are they attempting to play cupid? Encouraging discrimination? Quite possibly. It’s certainly a bold move and it’s not short of ramifications, but who could possibly say no to avoiding that screaming baby.

Englischer Garten, or what us tourists might call English Garden, is one of the largest urban parks in the world, sprawling over 3.7km of central Munich. Despite the name, there’s nothing particularly English about this place, except for the surfers attempting to surf an artificial wave being pumped across the mouth of an artificial water stream.

That seems a touch ‘attempting-to-do-beach-culture’ English. Aside from offering surfers a wave in a city hours from the nearest ocean, the garden boasts a Japanese teahouse, numerous beer gardens, 50 plus species of birds, over 100 bridges and a little pocket of space dedicated to nudists. If Adam and Eve needed a 21st Century garden, this would probably be it. Whether you want to get your zen on, enjoy a picnic, or get boozed and play bongos, you’re sure to find the perfect spot and have a dandy time. Just like these guys.

Over the past couple of years, the world hasn’t been short of tumultuous, large scale protests. From the Occupy Wall Street movement to the overthrow of leaders in Tunisia, Libya, Egypt and Yemen in what’s been termed the Arab Spring, the fight for democracy across the globe has not been a silent one. The International Centre of Photography in New York is currently hosting an exhibition aimed at generating conversation about these incredible events. Work on show will be from a number of different photographers all from the centre’s own alumni, providing an incredible stretch of diversity in how the movements are portrayed. If you’re hungry to understand the world beyond your western bedroom, this unearthing exhibition will not be one to miss.
