Japanese born, New York-based Kumi Yamashita is an artist whose versatility seems to know no bounds. Denim, galvanized nails, and a credit card are just a few of the media Yamashita has used to produce work. However, her latest and most notable endeavor has been her manipulation of light and shadow. Yamashita states: ‘I take objects and carve and place them in relation to a single light source. The complete artwork is therefore comprised of both the material (the solid objects) and the immaterial (the light or shadow)’.

Australian born, New York-based Justin Maller has a new project, Run Your Jewels, which has brought back online collaboration in full force. The website features a new competition every two weeks. In the first week, a new contributor, handpicked by Maller, uploads a high resolution image that the public has until the end of week to finish remixing. In the second week, voting takes place on the remixed images by the creator of the source image, Maller, and the public. The project has provided a unique opportunity for artists to collaborate with and even win prizes from household names like Joshua Davis and Chuck Anderson.

Matt W. Moore, also known as MWM, is a Maine-based illustrator and muralist with strong roots in graffiti. Moore is not only one of the most energetic and passionate artists I have ever met, but is prolific. Since 2008, he has been completing monthly “residencies” where he spends one month working non-stop to produce art for an exhibition, typically in a foreign country. His latest residency, titled Gravity, is a collection of highly organic work that deviates from Moore’s typical geometric style. The collection is currently on display at SINCE Gallery in Paris, France.

Designers Against Child Slavery is a non-profit group founded by young artist, John Mark Herskind. Herskind isn’t even old enough to legally drink in the US, yet he’s already working full-time to try and make a difference in sex trafficking using art. Designers Against Child Slavery focuses on awareness, prevention, and art therapy. Their latest endeavor was a live art exhibition in New York, titled Episodes, that raised thousands of dollars for victims of sex trafficking.

In 2010, I was informed by designer Rishi Sodha that he would be collaborating with Stuart Boyd, Garrick Webster and Antony Kitson to produce an art book that would eventually be sold to raise money for Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centers in London.

The concept behind the book was to take twelve different stories from terminal cancer survivors and send them to be visually translated by 144 different artists. Two years later, the project has been realized and is available for sale, with all proceeds going to charity. The book features work from the likes of Deanne Cheuk, Jules Julien and Michael Paul Young.
