This mixtape is the first project I have put out in a couple of years. I made all the beats and produced it. I think it’s a pretty raw and personal record and very different from other projects I’m currently working on. But it was definetly an album I needed to make.
This guy really reminds me of a close friend. I love the way he looks at his art, as a state of mind, or just something he does, without need for any more explanation. The detail and perspective is really interesting and tide washing these masterpieces away everyday makes them even more special.
There’s been some great hip hop coming out of the US recently (Lushlife, Danny Brown, Black Milk, Action Bronsen, ASAP Rocky, Mr. Muthafkn esq). I’m a big fan of the black hippy collective (Schoolboy Q, Kendrick Lammar, Jay Rock, Ab Soul). Ab Soul has a pretty unique concious angle and this is a stand out […]
I love this little snippet of Mos Def, because most great artists are bigger fans of other peoples work than their own. It’s great to see someone you really respect getting all excited and geeky about something they love. His knowledge of the lyrics is pretty impressive, too.
My obsession with hip hop generally starts with the lyrics, but the beats always have to grab me, too. SKYWLKR’s work with Danny Brown brought me to him, but I listen to his Strawberry Cough mixtape as much or even more. I love how dirty the drums are and how roughly he cuts the samples.
