Be warned. Canadian songstress Anjulie’s voice usually stays low-to-the-ground, but sometimes, without warning, it will rise up nasally, and girlishly, giving you attitude. It’s an unlikely sound that seduces you in a chemical way, like a pheromone. It’s adamant about making sure you dance, so that even if you’re standing in line at the grocery store, you’ll still be rotating your hips in the shape of a pentagon. Anjulie’s video for her song Boom takes place where all videos should: in a jungle, after-hours.

There are sounds coming from behind her, swishing and rolling around, like a stalker who happens to have good rhythm. The song seems constantly on the brink of an angry climactic sound. You expect the shattering noise of a stick on a cymbal, but instead you hear Anjulie wail, ‘Boom Shakalakalaka Boom Boom’. This be-bopping gibberish is, of course, describing Anjulie’s feelings for a boy she shouldn’t like — but really, has there ever been a pop song that’s not about falling in love with a bad news bear?

Anjulie has been picked as one of MTV’s Freshman 5, which means the network will be plugging her on all of its 900,000 stations, until her album debuts on August 4. I’ll keep you updated on whether or not this sours my taste for the lovely singer.

In one of Christophe Gilbert’s photo-surrealist pieces, three nude babies with heart-shaped butts, are lying in a row, backs to the sun, waiting for their turn to suckle their mother’s breast. Their mother is more victim than muse. Her anatomically flawless body is flailed across the ground, in a way that looks like it had been beaten up and thrown down after a hard day’s night of sadomasochism. She is asleep, but not peacefully. Most likely, when her loving triplets had woken her up in the middle of the night to be breast-fed, she was in such a hideous state that she simply rolled over to them and whispered, ‘Just have your way with me’. Her breast milk is probably laced with heroin.

The worst part about Christophe Gilbert’s work is that it forces you to map out these gloomy conclusions in your head, and then you feel like they are all your fault. You want to turn away, vomit up a grilled cheese sandwich, but instead, you tell yourself its okay if you look just once last time.

And it is okay! I assure you that everyone is just as reluctantly intrigued as you. Christophe Gilbert should probably be arrested but I hope that if he is, he will continue making pieces that leave us shaking our heads in utter horror.
