Be warned. Canadian songstress Anjulie’s voice usually stays low-to-the-ground, but sometimes, without warning, it will rise up nasally, and girlishly, giving you attitude. It’s an unlikely sound that seduces you in a chemical way, like a pheromone. It’s adamant about making sure you dance, so that even if you’re standing in line at the grocery store, you’ll still be rotating your hips in the shape of a pentagon. In one of Christophe Gilbert’s photo-surrealist pieces, three nude babies with heart-shaped butts, are lying in a row, backs to the sun, waiting for their turn to suckle their mother’s breast. Their mother is more victim than muse. Her anatomically flawless body is flailed across the ground, in a way that looks like it had been beaten up and thrown down after a hard day’s night of sadomasochism. She is asleep, but not peacefully. Most likely, when her loving triplets had woken her up in the middle of the night to be breast-fed, she was in such a hideous state that she simply rolled over to them and whispered, ‘Just have your way with me’. Her breast milk is probably laced with heroin. Read more

Summertime at McCarren Park in Williamsburg is picturesque. It’s often filled with a mix of people, old and young, picnicking or sitting in the shade, running along the track or playing soccer (or football, depending on where you’re from). It’s also connected to a now defunct McCarren (swimming) pool which transforms into an outdoor concert space on Sundays during the summer. Ok, so maybe it’s the extra-strong Brooklyn coffee I’m drinking or perhaps its that the pine coated goodness of Christmas is well and truly in the air, but I’m kinda excited this morning as my wife has just launched her website, Feature Shoot, which is a resource for photo editors, art directors, industry professionals, and pretty much anyone who appreciates good photography. It’s a great way to discover new photographic talent and the website is already bursting with interviews with up-and-coming American photographers alongside that of established photographers who have completed a project or whose work has taken on a new direction.
Castevet are a promising new experimental black metal band out of New York. They have a much more complex and technical approach than other bands of this ilk, revealing post-hardcore and death metal influences as evidenced by guitarist Andrew Hock’s work in deathgrind outfit Biolich and Boston jazz/death/doom band Ehnahre.
